Director, Leadership Communications/Speechwriter
*The Director, Leadership Communications/Speechwriter*will develop executive communications and strategies for the President and executives of the*University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB)*. UMB is Maryland’s only health, laws, and human services university with nationally ranked professional schools and a graduate school that confer the majority of health care, human services, and law professional degrees in Maryland. In addition, the University is known for the technological and therapeutic research that improve the health, wellness, safety, and productivity of our community. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland. * *Essential Functions:* * Identifies researches, assembles, and produces material for the president that includes keynote and state of the university speeches, remarks and talking points, question and answers, testimony, presentations, op-eds, white and position papers, and general communication. * Collaborates with the president in developing detailed executive communications including: writing, editing, crafting, and contributing to the enhancement of the president’s internal and external communications through multiple channels and audiences. * Exercises editorial judgment and maintains trust and confidence when drafting correspondence and messages on behalf of the president. Ensures that correspondence is accurate and reflects the president’s voice and style. * Assists the president in the development of essays, book chapters, and blogs. * Produces content for Office of the President’s website. * Keeps current on relevant issues related to the community, partnerships, economic development of West Baltimore, legislation, higher education, or policy issues that should be reflected in or referenced in communications. * May contribute to other executive communications projects. * Collaborates with key partners across the university to inform and coordinate presidential communications. * Performs other duties as assigned. *Education:*Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, business administration, or related field. *Experience:*Eight (8) years of experience in corporate or executive communications, journalism, technical writing, or marketing. Previous academic, healthcare, and research community experience preferred. *Other:*Knowledge and vision to take on broad-scope, high impact projects supporting the University’s strategic goals, mission, and vision. *Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:* * Superior understanding of the principles and practices of effective writing, editing, proofreading, reporting in executive communication content creation. * Ability to develop effective business communications with the respect to style, organization, and structure, and breath of subject matter using correct language and communications strategies and techniques. Ability to create communications that are in synergy with the president’s vision and voice for style and content and to accept criticism gracefully. * Ability to interact with senior executives and with internal and external partners to remain current in partnerships, developments, initiatives, and complex issues. * Ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. * Ability to operate quickly, effectively, and diplomatically with a diverse range of internal and external partners and to craft coherent narratives based on the president’s perspectives. * Ability to work discretely on sensitive and confidential assignments and maintains the trust and confidence of the president and senior executives. * Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. * Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to support a mission and strategic vision. Instructional, training, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Skill in consultation and change management. * Accomplishes responsibilities by primarily (>50%) performing significant managerial functions within area of responsibility. * Possess subject matter expertise in a professional discipline. Achieves objectives through coordinated efforts of others. * Develops, implements, and manages goals and objectives of the role. Participates in supporting strategic planning. * Determines and enforces processes, practices, and/or policies. Manages operations, workflow, projects, and/or systems that have strategic impact. * Primarily supports President and senior executives in communicating strategic direction. Assists in development and communication of strategic communications. Responsible for planning, development, and implementation of strategies. * Substantial latitude to make managerial decisions within area of responsibility. Upper senior professionals rely on expertise and advice to make decisions.
