Director, Life Science Commercialization

Overview

The Director, Life Science Commercialization is a pivotal role that provides leadership in the development and execution of commercialization strategies for life science based technology and solutions. Reporting to the VP, Chief Innovation and Commercialization Officer, this role is expected to primarily support the Center for Discovery and Innovation on behalf of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization in an effort to maximize the commercialization of intellectual property in the pursuit of tangible revenue streams. This role will be responsible for developing business opportunities for emerging and existing inventions in collaboration with the leadership of Center of Discovery and Innovation as well as HMHRI as appropriate. The role will require collaboration with internal stakeholders such as Finance, Legal, and Strategy, as well as others as needed.

The Center for Discovery and Innovation- CDI was established by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) as an academic basic and translational research enterprise to rapidly translate science innovation to the clinic and to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and other acute and chronic diseases.  The CDI has grown rapidly since its origins in 2019, and now has 32 labs, 190 scientists and allied personnel supported by 60 NIH grants and more than 30 other grants and contracts. Areas of expertise include genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance, stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics and biomarker development, and pharmacology.

This position will offer a hybrid schedule; will be a combination of on site work in Nutley, NJ, various client meetings throughout NJ, and remote work.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Director, Life Science Commercialization at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

Foster strong relationships with internal researchers, industry partners, and external collaborators. Define and communicate market trends for value creation in life sciences and how those trends inform the ongoing evaluation of the strategic commercialization plan. Collaborates with the executive leadership to assess opportunities to create commercial strategies for developing inventions and assist in developing commercialization plans to realize new sources of revenue. Negotiates and finalizes mutually beneficial licensing agreements with industry partners. Facilitates the creation and management of spinout companies based on institute research. Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to provide strategic guidance for company formation and growth.Leads negotiations for equity stakes, licensing agreements and partnerships with spinout companies. Develops and sustains effective trusted relationships and partnerships with key partners to provide relevant insights, expertise and advice. Manages reporting and communication regarding commercialization for internal and external reporting. Understands the life sciences industry needs and market trends to facilitate convergence of assets and the commercial market. Works with the Office of Innovation and Commercialization and Finance to perform business analysis and prepares recommendations and business plans as needed. Identifies, screens and evaluates new opportunities to commercialize intellectual property in collaboration with the Researches as appropriate. Participates in portfolio planning, policy development and communication strategies around projects and their associated reporting. Participates in training, activation and optimization activities in this area. Participates in strategic and budgetary planning processes; provide recommendations on desired policies and goals and implement new/revised programs according to established guidelines. Documents, creates and publishes relevant commercialization reports to key internal stakeholders and customer group(s) at regular intervals. Provides effective direction, guidance and leadership, often through influence, for assigned team members and teams, fostering the effective integration of efforts with system-wide innovation and commercialization initiatives. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Advanced degree in relevant field (Ph.D., J.D., M.B.A., or equivalent). Minimum of 8 years of experience in technology commercialization of life science technology.Possess strong analytical skills, including an understanding of business economics and financial resources. Ability to understand organizational goals and align commercialization strategies for life science inventions. Strong ability to manage complex commercial relationships from conception to commercial results (implementation, achievement of milestones and organizational objectives). Patient and effective communication skills to understand technology needs of researchers, administrators, and executives. Build trusted advisor relationships. Demonstrated experience working within complex and evolving legal and financial structures. Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
