The Director, Operations will lead and oversee a manufacturing facility to deliver high quality products to our Customers, on time, while maintaining a safe and engaged workplace. This individual is responsible for establishing direction, collaborating with cross functional support partners, and ensuring effective execution of operational activities to meet our business objectives. The effective execution of operational activities is to be conducted while establishing, reinforcing, and supporting an environment of continuous improvement, safety, quality, learning, people development, and upholding a values-based culture. The ideal candidate has the ability and desire to lead both tactically and strategically, leaning in where needed to support the teams, and motivating every level of the organization to drive business results.

Direct and lead overall plant operations: production, engineering, quality control, supply chain, and shipping, along with supporting staff functions. Determine and manage plant procedures and policy consistent with company, quality, and regulatory guidelines. Foster and promote a healthy and safe work environment consistent with OSHA, EPA, or other applicable country, regional, and/or municipal standards. Enforce that all potential or real hazards and injuries are reported, work practices are properly followed, all appropriate PPE is used, and all applicable safety training is delivered. Develop short and long-term strategies and objectives including capital and workforce planning and administer operating functions, approvals, reports, and metrics. Develop, lead, and sponsor Lean Manufacturing strategies. Oversee continuous improvement activities and ensure principles of operational excellence are driven deeply into the culture and regularly assessed for improvement; strategically deploy lean tools to drive step-change improvements; and produce and deliver results to meet business objectives. Manage delivery of all products within established cost and Quality standards in accordance with Customer requirements, Quality Systems, design specifications, production schedules, and cost work standards. Develop, promote, and maintain an engaged workforce that includes individual development opportunities for employees, training and education, coaching, leadership development, standard daily management, idea sharing, reward and recognition, effective communication, employee involvement, effective recruitment and succession planning, and accountability. Develop, supervise, evaluate, and coach direct reports and the facility’s leadership team. Provide the necessary coaching and mentoring to develop both technical and managerial skills. Ensure and promote positive employee and union relations (where applicable) to ensure a highly motivated workforce that is dedicated to, and supportive of meeting Customer requirements and company objectives. Develop annual business plans in support of corporate objectives and monitor performance against plan, taking corrective actions to ensure all objectives are met. Control activities and expenditures to ensure operating within established budgets and achieve agreed-upon business objectives. Communicate the progress and status of the operations at the facility to corporate management. Serve as liaison between the facility and the other STERIS facilities and business groups. Promote and represent STERIS in the local civic and medical communities. Host Customers and other visitors. Instill a Customer-centered culture across the organization. Other operations-related responsibilities which may be assigned.
The Experience, Skills, and Abilities needed
Required:
Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Business, or Related Technical Field) Minimum 10 years’ experience leading manufacturing operations at various levels in a similar manufacturing environment (e.g. metal fabrication, machining, processing, packaging, assembly, etc.). Minimum 5 years’ experience leading or supporting continuous improvement implementations and/or working in a high performing lean organization. Minimum 3 years’ experience leading a Manufacturing Plant in delivering favorable results.
Preferred:
Regulatory/FDA, medical device operations experience, strongly preferred. Experience with MRP/Kanban, Regulatory/FDA, medical device operations, preferred.
Other:
Excellent leadership, business acumen, analytical, and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively manage, lead and motivate a multidisciplinary team. Thorough understanding of general practices and operational requirements in Safety, Human Resources, Quality Systems, Engineering, Materials Management, and Finance.
