Director, Phlebotomy Services

The Director of Phlebotomy Services is responsible for overseeing the operations of the phlebotomy department, ensuring high-quality patient care and compliance with healthcare regulations. Key responsibilities include managing staff, developing and implementing policies and procedures, maintaining quality assurance, and managing budgets with P and L oversight. The director collaborates with other healthcare teams to optimize patient flow and address customer service concerns. Additionally, this role focuses on colleague training and professional development as well as driving continuous improvement in phlebotomy practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Lead, manage, and mentor the phlebotomy team, ensuring high levels of staff performance, competency, and morale

Oversee the recruitment, training, scheduling, and evaluation of phlebotomists on a regular basis

Ensure that all phlebotomy staff are compliant with company policies, industry regulations, and best practices

Monitor and evaluate phlebotomy practices to maintain high standards of patient care, safety, and specimen integrity.

Management of the Phlebotomy resource budget and individual Patient Service Center Profit and Loss sheets.

Oversee the continuous education and development of phlebotomy staff with the assistance of phlebotomy trainers

Provide ongoing training on techniques, safety protocols, and patient interaction

Address patient concerns or complaints and ensure positive resolution, fostering a patient-centered environment.

Develop and implement efficient workflows for phlebotomy services, ensuring optimal patient care and minimal wait times.

Ensure excellent patient care through effective communication, compassion, and attention to detail during the phlebotomy process.

Support a culture of inclusiveness and transparency, continuous improvement, excellence, and positive role-modeling.

Collaborate with other laboratory departments (logistics, specimen management) to ensure smooth specimen flow and efficient interdepartmental operations.

Maintain clear communication with medical staff, laboratory professionals, and leadership teams to address patient concerns and department needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A.         Education/Experience:

             Associate degree from an accredited institution; or ten years of experience, or a combination of education and experience.  Previous phlebotomy and management experience required.

B.         Language Ability:

            Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

C.         Math Ability:

            Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

D.         Reasoning Ability:

            Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

E.         Computer Skills:

            To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Word processing software; Excel spreadsheet software; Workday data entry for Human Resource systems, Atlas, and Sunquest and/or Co-Path laboratory software. Training is performed on the job.

F.         Certificates and Licenses:

Certification by a recognized certifying agency for Clinical Laboratory Professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc.).
