Director, Platforms and Partnerships Portfolio Manager

Illumina’s Director, Platforms and Partnerships Portfolio Manager will be responsible for developing and executing the company’s strategy to ensure R&D investments in platforms and partnerships are aligned with the organization's strategic objectives and goals. Reporting to the Head of R&D Strategy, Portfolio, and Operations, you will manage the program management team responsible for delivering the R&D programs in the platforms and partnerships portfolios.

We expect this key position to enable Illumina’s strategy by leading the following:

Ensure that the R&D investment in platforms and partnerships aligns with the organization's strategic objectives and goals while balancing risk, value, and investment across the portfolio.Structure data to aid in the evaluation and selection of projects based on criteria such as strategic alignment, ROI, risk, and resource availability, prioritizing those that drive the most value.Allocate resources across projects to optimize efficiency and effectiveness, identifying and resolving resource constraints and conflicts.Track the performance of individual projects and the portfolio as a whole, reporting on progress, risks, and performance metrics to stakeholders and senior management.Identify, assess, and mitigate risks across the portfolio and ensure risk management practices are integrated into the portfolio management process.Engage with stakeholders to ensure their needs and expectations are met by facilitating communication between project teams and stakeholders.Establish and maintain governance structures and processes to ensure projects comply with organizational policies and standards.Implement best practices and lessons learned from past projects, continuously improving portfolio management processes and methodologies.Manage the portfolio budget and ensure projects are delivered within their financial constraints, conducting financial analysis and reporting on the portfolio's financial performance.Oversee performance, mentor and develop program management staff that lead cross-functional efforts focused on delivering platform products from design to release.Assign and monitor the work of project/program management staff, offering support and direction, and hold overall responsibility for coordinating efforts leading to project release.Specialize in developing and executing project plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.

Requirements:

Strategic:

Apply frameworks to facilitate decision-making on product investments, product end-of-life decisions, and partnerships to maximize R&D returns.Ability to manage multiple projects and products within a portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and strategies.Skills in setting long-term goals, defining project roadmaps, and aligning them with business objectives.Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with product development projects.

Technical:

Expert in project management methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall), critical path analysis, and tools (Project, Smartsheet, JIRA, Asana).Understanding of the product development lifecycle from ideation to launch and beyond.Ability to manage budgets, forecast costs, and analyze financial performance of product portfolios.Skills in analyzing and transforming data into actionable findings to inform decision-making and measure the success of product initiatives.

Interpersonal:

Excellent leadership skills in spearheading cross-functional teams, inspiring and motivating team members, and driving project success.Effective communication with stakeholders, team members, and executives to ensure alignment and convey project status.Demonstrated ability to negotiate resources, timelines, and expectations with various stakeholders and influence at all levels.Working collaboratively with different departments, such as marketing, business development, R&D, and sales, to ensure successful product development and launch.

Experience:

Typically requires a minimum of 18 years of related experience10+ years as Program Manager or Core Team Leader resulting in the launch of highly complex RUO products/platforms5+ years as R&D portfolio managerBachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering or a related technical disciplineBusiness training such as an MBA degree, business certificate, or equivalent is not required but preferred

The estimated base salary range for the Director, Platforms and Partnerships Portfolio Manager role based in the United States of America is: $183,700 - $275,500. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
