Director, PNO Performance Leadership

Description:Provides expert leadership, analysis and implementation support in the areas of physician network operations including business issue identification and analysis, business process redesign, application of best practice methodologies, and identification of strategic and financial opportunities/risks. Collaborates as a change leader with System Office and Regional Health Ministry (RHM) leaders in translating issues, goals and objectives into practical and integrated solutions and services that help to ensure optimum clinical quality and business performance. Assignments must be accomplished effectively, tactfully and objectively with full regard for the uniqueness of the health care environment. Shares accountability with other System Office and RHM leaders for operational performance across the organization. Conducts work from both a strategic perspective system wide and a tactical perspective at the RHM levels. Position functions at multiple levels in Trinity Health Medical Groups, including physician office, RHM, Region and system-wide levels.

This role is dedicated to ensuring that Trinity Health's mission, vision, and values are effectively integrated into all operational practices and decision-making. The position supports leaders in understanding and applying operational performance enhancement methods, tools, and resources to ensure optimal resource management, service delivery, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Performance Management:

Collaborates with executives and leaders to assess the effectiveness of operational performance methods and tools. Ensures the application of policies, standards, benchmarks, and metrics to optimize resource allocation, enhance performance, and meet business goals within the physician network organizations.Provides guidance on performance measurement and process improvement strategies, including cost-benefit analysis, facility planning, and operational enhancement tools.Educates executives and leadership teams on improving operational efficiency and addressing business challenges.

Efficiency & Cost Management:

Leverages expert skills in managing physician and provider productivity, cost management, and efficiency. Utilizes benchmarks and key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess and improve physician office and medical group performance.Demonstrates proficiency in analyzing compensation, production, and clinical quality metrics. Guides leaders in achieving operational targets through strategic management of resources.

Operational Improvement & Tools Utilization:

Applies principles of operational performance improvement, including methodologies like Six Sigma, Lean, and process optimization tools.Uses analytical tools (e.g., benchmarking, forecasting, workflow modeling) to evaluate operational performance and recommend actionable improvement initiatives.Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop and implement improvement plans that drive productivity, revenue, resource utilization, and customer service outcomes.

Support for System-Wide Operations:

Provides strategic support to the Vice President of Trinity Health Medical Groups (THMG) and other senior leadership teams regarding system-wide performance initiatives and operational status reviews.Assists with the implementation of initiatives aimed at improving patient/customer service, employee engagement, quality, and operational effectiveness.Coordinates efforts across departments and committees to align operational goals with broader organizational objectives.

Performance Measurement & Reporting:

Oversees the design, maintenance, and use of performance improvement reporting tools to track, measure, and communicate operational performance.Leads the development and implementation of systems to gather, report, and analyze operational data, ensuring continuous feedback and transparency across the organization.Serves as the system administrator for performance improvement databases and tools, managing user access, data security, and system upgrades.

Resource Management & Vendor Relations:

Secures resources and coordinates the allocation of operational support to enhance the delivery of services, ensuring alignment with ministry goals.Leads or participates in vendor selection processes, evaluates tools and services, and ensures effective contract compliance to support performance improvement initiatives.

Communication & Leadership:

Communicates operational goals, progress, and challenges clearly and effectively with stakeholders at all levels, from frontline staff to executive leadership.Demonstrates executive presence in discussions and decision-making processes related to operational performance.

Team Leadership & Development:

Manages, develops, and evaluates operational support teams to ensure alignment with organizational objectives.Provides leadership and mentorship, fostering a collaborative environment focused on achieving operational excellence.

Continuous Improvement Culture:

Champions the adoption and implementation of best practices for process optimization and operational efficiency across Trinity Health’s Medical Groups.Drives continuous learning and improvement by facilitating the sharing of successful strategies and performance insights throughout the organization.

Compliance & Ethical Conduct:

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and organizational compliance standards.Ensures adherence to Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity and Compliance Program, promoting ethical behavior and integrity in all operational decisions and activities.LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Thorough understanding of the theory and application of performance improvement processes and methodologies as well as health care operations usually obtained through a Bachelor’s degree in Management Engineering, Health Care Administration and/or BSN or other related degree and minimum of seven (7) years of experience, which may include as a performance engineer, with increasing levels of responsibility and titled leadership, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience related to medical group or physician network management.  Medical group or health system ambulatory care/physician network experience required.  Demonstrated expertise in productivity management, typical of a management engineer role. Individuals with significant senior leadership experience in clinical operations highly desirable. Master’s degree is preferred.

Comprehensive knowledge of medical group operations preferred.

Possesses expert skills in managing productivity, demonstrating proficiency in the use of various tools and methodologies and successfully coaching all levels of the organization to manage to established targets.

Possesses understanding of standard operational performance improvement methods such as Six Sigma, Lean, Collaboration Team facilitation, etc.

Proven track record of effectively consulting with and coaching business executives and entities in performance improvement initiatives and designing and implementing organizational capability interventions in large, complex, multi-hospital or multi-system organizations.

Demonstrated ability and skill in identifying performance gaps.  Experience developing applicable statistical, financial and business plans and models.  Experience with advanced computer applications for benchmarking, productivity, statistical analysis and decision support.

Must possess a clear understanding of the uniqueness of the physician practice environment within a hospital/health system.  Must demonstrate proficiency in applying performance improvement techniques to medical group and health care related problems. Must possess excellent data analytical skills, as well as effective communication and human relations skills.

Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health.

Must be able to operate effectively in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

This position operates in a typical office environment, often in cubicles and shared space.  The area is well-lit, temperature-controlled and free from hazards.  Incumbent communicates frequently in person, via e-mail, teleconference or telephone, with people in a number of different locations, on a variety of issues. 

Manual dexterity is needed in order to operate a keyboard.  Hearing is needed for extensive telephone and in person communications.

Must be able to travel to the various Trinity Health sites as needed, which may be up to 25% of the time.

Work hours and intensity will vary, and flexibility is expected to accomplish tasks outside normal work hours.

Must be able to adapt to frequently changing work priorities and be able to prioritize and balance the requirements of working with the System Office and Regional Health Ministries (RHMs).
