Job Overview

The Director, Engineering works to establish and drive the technology solutions strategy and implementation for Macy’s needs. The Director partners with various technical and business functions across the enterprise, focusing on strategy and governance to make balanced technical decisions that consider delivery timelines, predictability, and business value.

 

This leader possesses a strong engineering foundation with expertise in modern technology stacks and experience in implementing cutting-edge technologies. The candidate has robust managerial experience to leverage the existing engineering team, attract and recruit top engineering talent, and demonstrate a successful track record of leading large-scale technology implementations in retail or related industries. The Director is also willing to take on additional engineering and leadership duties as assigned.

 

What You Will Do

Explore Macy’s future technology needs by balancing innovation, industry trends, and the requirements of customer and associate-facing solutions. Lead the development, delivery, and operation of technology solutions to modernize Macy’s capabilities, advising senior management on strategic plans and improvements to systems and processes that align with the business vision. Stay current on the technology stack and platforms. Collaborate with various cross-functional teams to modernize Macy’s platforms. Enhance software quality across the Macy’s Technology organization, driving end-to-end accountability at all levels. Develop talent and build technology expertise within the Macy’s Technology organization. Mentor and coach leaders and individual contributors reporting to this position, actively raising the talent bar across the technology team. Manage the portfolio's budget, project planning, and resource allocation.

 

Skills You Will Need

Technical Expertise: Strong engineering foundation with proficiency in modern technology stacks, open-source technologies, and cloud-native application development (GCP, Azure, AWS).

Project Management: Proven ability to manage large-scale technology implementations, including budget planning and resource allocation.

Strategic Thinking: Skilled in exploring future technology needs while balancing innovation, industry trends, and business requirements.

Leadership: Strong managerial experience to develop the engineering team, mentor leaders, and enhance overall talent.

Collaboration: Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to modernize platforms and improve processes.

Quality Assurance: Commitment to enhancing software quality and driving accountability within the technology organization.

Agile Methodology: Passionate about working in a fast-paced Agile environment to deliver functional features quickly.

Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present ideas clearly.

Decision-Making: Strong reasoning skills to balance short-term tactical decisions with long-term strategic thinking.

Adaptability: Demonstrated leadership in changing and challenging situations.

 

Who You Are

Dedicated to fulfilling ideals of diversity, inclusion, and respect that Macy’s aspires to achieve every day in every way. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required. 15+ years of experience in software engineering and high-volume enterprise systems. 10+ years of experience in engineering management and delivering large-scale transformation initiatives in a retail environment.  Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision. Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
