Posting Number NONAC3468 Job Title Director, Project Management Office Position Title Director, Project Management Office Position Type Non-Faculty Number of vacancies 1 Salary Department Information Technology Position Summary The Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) seeks an experienced and dynamic Director, Project Management Office to provide strategic leadership and operational management across the institution’s project management initiatives. This role combines technical oversight and project management duties with strategic leadership and coordination responsibilities.
As the Director, Project Management Office, the incumbent will lead the Project Management Office (PMO), oversee project portfolios, and drive innovation across the institution’s research, clinical, and educational missions. They will serve as a critical advisor to the CIO, ensuring seamless execution of priorities, managing cross-functional initiatives, and coordinating activities across various departments.
The ideal candidate will combine technical acumen, strategic planning, and leadership skills with a passion for leveraging project management to advance academic medicine, research, and healthcare innovation.
Responsibilities:
Lead the planning, initiation, execution, monitoring, and successful completion of significant projects across MSM, including educational technology implementations, research initiatives, clinical infrastructure enhancements, and operational improvements. Define project scope, goals, deliverables, and timelines in collaboration with stakeholders, ensuring alignment with institutional strategic objectives. Capacity Planning: Develop detailed project plans, including resource allocation, schedules, budgets, and risk mitigation strategies. Strategic Project Leadership: Assist the CIO in developing and implementing a project management vision and roadmap aligned with the institution’s strategic educational, research, and healthcare goals. Digital Transformation: Lead initiatives to modernize the institution’s project management practices, including integrating tools, methodologies, and best practices. Innovation and Research Support: Support and enhance project management systems for cutting-edge research, clinical trials, and precision medicine. Foster collaborations between project management and research departments to accelerate innovation. IT Governance: Establish and maintain IT governance frameworks to ensure alignment of IT projects with institutional goals, regulatory compliance, and best practices in project management. Budget and Resource Management: Manage project budgets and resources, optimizing financial and personnel resources for operational and strategic initiatives. Dashboards and Executive Presentations: Develop and maintain project dashboards for tracking progress and performance. Prepare and deliver executive-level presentations to senior leadership to communicate project status, risks, and outcomes. Strategic Planning and Prioritization:
Collaborate with senior leadership to identify, prioritize, and plan strategic projects that align with the medical school’s mission and growth initiatives. Manage a portfolio of projects, balancing competing priorities and ensuring that resources are allocated appropriately to high-impact initiatives. Oversee the development of short- and long-term project roadmaps, ensuring that all projects are delivered on time and contribute to the medical school’s strategic goals.
Team Leadership and Development:
Lead and mentor a team of project managers and support staff, fostering a collaborative, results-driven environment. Provide guidance, coaching, and support to project management staff to enhance their skills and ensure the successful delivery of projects. Develop and implement best practices, tools, and templates for project management across the medical school, standardizing processes and improving efficiency. Conduct performance reviews and professional development planning for the project management team.
Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in project management, Business Administration, Information Technology, or a related field or equivalent years of experience. 5-8 years of leadership experience in project management, academic medicine, higher education, or healthcare administration. Proven experience in project management strategy, digital transformation, and operations, ideally in healthcare or academia. Strong understanding of medical education, clinical operations, research environments, and higher education, with the ability to bridge technical and administrative priorities. Exceptional project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple large-scale projects and initiatives simultaneously. Experience managing cross-functional teams and working collaboratively across diverse stakeholder groups. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to senior leadership and non-technical audiences. Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as HIPAA, FERPA, and other regulations impacting academic medical institutions.
Preferred Qualifications Prior experience as a senior leader in a higher education or healthcare organization. Experience with IT operations, healthcare technologies, and medical research systems. Project management certifications (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2, Scrum Master).
