We are looking for a highly motivated Director, Property Taxation to join our Canadian Asset Management team located in Toronto. The Director, Property Taxation will be a newly internalized role that will be responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive property tax strategy to generate potential saving opportunities for the various directly managed properties in Canada. The role will work closely with various asset managers and finance team members to implement their plans. A potential candidate will have property tax experience across multiple sectors (including Office, Retail, Industrial, Residential and Hotel) and will be familiar with various municipal processes and requirements across Canada.
Key Responsibilities include:
Develop and maintain a comprehensive property tax strategy including identifying and quantifying potential savings opportunities
Work with cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate risk exposure related to property taxes
Identify areas for potential appeals, negotiate assessments and review settlement proposals
Appoint and manage external consultants and evaluate the value and scope of services performed by external consultants, focusing on the specialized or highly complex appeals and legal matters
Collaborate with Asset Management and Finance teams to provide tax forecasting, scenario analysis, and tax strategies for leasing and capital projects
Conduct periodic reviews and briefings for the Asset Management and Finance teams on strategic tax initiatives, upcoming deadlines, and potential risks/opportunities
Prepare regular reports, summaries, and presentations on property tax positions, appeal progress, and savings realized for senior leadership and co-owners/investors
Act as the in-house expert and point of contact for all property tax queries, including deliberating with Investment team members on potential acquisitions and Development team members on developments/redevelopments and master plans
Monitor industry best-practices and establish relationships with industry and peer experts

Hold an undergraduate degree in Commerce, Finance, Real Estate, Urban Planning, or Engineering
Have 8-10 years of work experience with a focus on property valuations and commercial property tax assessment, appeals and strategy across multiple asset sectors and markets
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, knowledge of ARGUS Enterprise considered an asset
