If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you! **The Role:** Under the direction of our Executive Director of Quality, you will provide day-to-day operational leadership for risk management. This role is pivotal in the development and coordination of our risk management, patient safety, and accreditation compliance programs. Your mission: to reduce the incidence and severity of damage claims against the hospital and ensure regulatory compliance is met and maintained. You'll enhance the effectiveness of our systems to monitor and manage risk and patient safety events, leading facility-wide projects and supporting legal counsel in case management. **What You'll Do:** + **Risk and Patient Safety Advocate:** Develop and maintain structures and processes to analyze risk management and patient safety event data. Enhance system effectiveness to proactively mitigate risks and improve patient safety outcomes. + **Operational Leader:** Oversee the preparation of claims files (medical malpractice, auto, property, and general liability insurance), and collaborate with claims and legal counsel on case management. You'll also assist in determining claims causation and facilitate immediate process improvements to avoid repeat events. + **Educational Leader:** Provide essential education to staff about risk, regulatory compliance, and risk exposure. Lead root cause analyses and support compliance with applicable regulatory agencies and the Joint Commission. + **Cross-Functional Collaborator:** Work closely with hospital Managers and Risk Specialists to ensure consistent, effective, and efficient risk management and patient safety functions, while fostering High Reliability Organization (HRO) best practices across the facility. + **24x7 Call Coverage:** Rotate with other risk management designated individuals to provide round-the-clock call coverage, which may include being physically present at the facility during off-hours, weekends, and holidays. **Essential Functions:** + **Policy Development:** Create and maintain departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and activities to improve organizational performance. + **Team Leadership:** Direct the work of risk specialists, patient safety teams, and physician peer reviews to meet departmental needs and expectations. + **Investigative Support:** Provide support for investigations related to hospital liability (excluding Workers' Compensation) involving patients, employees, physicians, and visitors. + **Litigation Liaison:** Keep executive leadership informed on the status of litigation and obtain necessary authorizations for settlement payments. + **Regulatory Compliance:** Support regulatory agency surveys and reporting, including interactions with CDPH, DMH, DHS, CMS, FDA, and the Joint Commission. + **Education and Training:** Provide education to medical staff and hospital departments on accreditation and licensing standards and ensure survey readiness. + **Event Analysis:** Lead investigative and support activities for Root Cause Analysis, Intense Analysis, and Failure Mode Effect Analysis, and communicate lessons learned facility-wide. + **System Super User:** Act as the facility Super User for the Unusual Occurrence Report system, managing permissions, reviewing submissions, and preparing data summaries for leadership. + **Professional Development:** Enhance your professional growth through participation in educational programs, professional affiliations, and other development opportunities. **What You'll Bring:** + **Educational Background:** Bachelor's Degree in Science, Healthcare, or Nursing; equivalent education/experience considered. + **Certifications:** Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) upon hire. California Fire and Life Safety Card within 30 days of hire. + **Experience:** Preferred 5 years in acute care and hospital operations. + **Knowledge and Skills:** Comprehensive understanding of national healthcare trends, risk management, privacy, compliance, patient safety, and regulatory requirements.
