The Director of Surgical Education will lead and oversee the educational programs within the Department of Surgery. This role includes developing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, and fostering a culture of excellence in surgical education. The Director will work closely with faculty, residents, and students to enhance the quality of surgical training and education. This position requires a deep understanding of medical education, including knowledge of Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards.
Minimum Qualifications PhD or EdD in Medical Education, Health Professions Education, or a related field is required. Extensive training in adult education; curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; assessment of cognitive skills using the current models of validity evidence; and evaluation of educational programs through multi-dimensional approaches. Minimum of seven (7) years of experience working on education program development and evaluation required, including technology-enhanced education and e-learning Working knowledge of LCME and ACGME standards and experience ensuring compliance with these accreditation requirements. Must possess a comprehensive skillset in medical education Extensive project management skills and experience required. Experience with staff management and developing and managing a budget desired. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) necessary to effectively interact with all levels of the organization. Ability to establish strong working relationships with all division teams and management.
Preferred Qualifications Experience working in medical education in a surgical department. Experience in associations, specialty societies, healthcare, and/or education desired. Curriculum Development and Management: Design, implement, and continuously improve the surgical education curriculum. Ensure the curriculum aligns with current best practices in medical education and meets LCME and ACGME standards. Incorporate innovative teaching methods, including simulation, technology, and interprofessional education. Accreditation and Compliance: Oversee compliance with LCME and ACGME standards and prepare for accreditation reviews and site visits. Develop and maintain policies and procedures that support accreditation requirements. Collaborate with institutional leadership to ensure alignment with overall educational goals and accreditation standards. Faculty and Staff Development: Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for faculty involved in surgical education. Facilitate faculty participation in educational research and scholarship. Conduct regular evaluations of faculty teaching performance and provide constructive feedback. Program Evaluation and Improvement: Develop and implement systems to evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs. Analyze data and feedback to make informed decisions about program improvements. Lead quality improvement initiatives related to surgical education. Resident and Student Support: Serve as a resource and advocate for residents and students in the surgery program. Assist in the recruitment and selection of residents and medical students. Provide guidance on career development and research opportunities within surgery. Interdepartmental Collaboration: Work closely with other departments and programs to ensure a cohesive educational experience for learners. Represent the Department of Surgery in institutional committees related to education and accreditation.
