Director, Sustainability

Job Summary

The Director of Sustainability will serve as part of the wider Assurant global Sustainability Team, and assist advancing our global sustainability strategy, Sustainability Vision and long-term ambition for our sustainability strategic priorities: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Circularity, and Climate.

The role is accountable for the development and implementation of multi-country, regional, and enterprise-wide programs, initiatives, voluntary sustainability disclosures (i.e., annual sustainability report, Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), CDP, EcoVadis, etc.), and support compliance with existing and anticipated mandatory sustainability disclosures affecting our global operations, including the SEC climate-related disclosure, Corporate Social Responsibility Directive (CSRD), International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), and others

This position works closely with various stakeholders to gather and analyze sustainability data, supports the preparation of sustainability reports, and develops insights that drive strategic decision-making to support the company’s sustainability goals.  Key stakeholders will include our global employees, critical suppliers, partners and clients, regulators, and senior management teams, including those on our Sustainability Oversight and Action committee. The candidate will be responsible for strong global collaboration with key business functions, including Product, Supply Chain, Asset Management, Risk Management, Legal and Compliance, and others to influence the business and drive implementation of our sustainability strategy, execution of our long-term targets that align with recognized disclosure frameworks, and support our operations with increasing mandatory sustainability disclosure.

Job Responsibilities

40% Sustainability Disclosure Management

Lead the development and execution of the enterprise-wide sustainability disclosure roadmap to support compliance and sustainability transparency practices. This roadmap is expected to incorporate best practices, standards, and relevant frameworks, and standardize the process for managing voluntary and mandatory sustainability disclosures, including, for example, the annual sustainability report, TCFD, SASB, CDP, EcoVadis, the SEC climate-related disclosure, CSRD, ISSB, and others. It will be scalable and serve as the model to approach new sustainability regulations affecting our operations.

60% Sustainability Strategy and Long-Term Ambition

Support Assurant’s initiatives that progress our long-term ambition. Lead the development, maintenance,  and execution of Assurant’s climate transition plan in alignment with our long-term climate targets, including net-zero commitments. Develop trusted relationships and drive collaboration with internal/external partners to identify innovative decarbonization efforts and support Assurant’s circularity ambition. Drive employee and other stakeholder engagement to raise awareness of sustainability throughout the organization. Support routine initiatives that inform the development and advancement of our sustainability strategy (i.e., materiality assessments, climate scenario analysis, etc.). Collaborate with other Sustainability Team members to leverage our sustainability digital solutions to drive data-driven insight and decision-making. Support and serve as a key contributor to Assurant’s enterprise-wide Sustainability Oversight and Action Committee, which is Assurant’s management-level sustainability governance structure that establishes enterprise sustainability strategy, initiatives, and long-term ambition. Serve as a sustainability thought leader supporting our global leaders and business outcomes.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Data Analytics, Business Administration, or a related field. 10+ years of experience in sustainability reporting, ESG analytics, or a related field, with at least 3-5 years in a sustainability leadership role. Proven experience producing enterprise Sustainability Reports, and leading other sustainability disclosures, including TCFD, SASB, CDP, EcoVadis, the SEC climate-related disclosure, CSRD, ISSB, is preferred. Proven experience in managing sustainability reporting processes, including data collection, analysis, and disclosure. Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and generate actionable insights. Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Fluency in the English language is required Proficiency in sustainability reporting tools, data analytics software, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience in developing enterprise sustainability disclosure roadmaps and programs, inclusive of best practices, metrics controls, and while utilizing relevant standards and frameworks. Ability to influence across multiple levels of an organization and distill complex information into actionable and effective insight.

Preferred Skills

Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Data Analytics, or a related field. Professional certifications such as Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Certification, or equivalent. Experience with sustainability data management platforms and software. Experience working in a specific industry, such as energy, manufacturing, or finance, with a focus on ESG reporting and analytics. Experience in financial and climate-related risk management.

Pay Range

$119,600.00 - $199,800.00

Any posted pay range considers a wide range of compensation factors, including candidate background, experience, and work location, while also allowing for salary growth within the position.
