The Director of Trade Compliance, Life Sciences Innovation Group (LSIG) is responsible for trade compliance programs at SCIEX, Molecular Devices and Phenomenex. Responsibilities will include managing a team of two (2) trade compliance associates; continuing to develop, execute and manage the SCIEX, Molecular Devices and Phenomenex export and import trade compliance program globally, while significantly contributing to on-going operational trade compliance functions (working closely with each operating company’s Operations and Supply Chain functions). The role will also offer excellent development and career opportunities across LSIG, the Life Sciences platform and Danaher as a whole.

This position is part of the Legal & Compliance function and reports to the Danaher Life Sciences Platform Global Trade Compliance Director. It will be based on-site in Framingham, MA.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to: 

Implement operational business systems and tools required to achieve legal and regulatory conformity and to minimize business risk and liability exposure, providing consultation to business units, global subsidiaries and operational functions.

Ensure that LSIG Operating Companies (OpCos) are compliant with domestic and foreign export and import requirements – manage a team of OpCo trade compliance leads to deliver this and individually contribute to operational elements of trade compliance program (classification, valuation and broker management)

Develop, improve and execute all aspects of a trade compliance program, including process design, periodic self-testing, training and education, and business strategy review.

Work collaboratively with LSIG business leaders to ensure they have implemented effective compliance internal controls into their procedures and work instructions to minimize risk, but also to maximize business opportunities.

Act as a business partner to enable far-reaching operational and strategic decisions e.g. on manufacturing and Research & Development (R&D) footprint, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partnerships, sales channel choices, product branding and launching, or mergers & acquisitions

Review, respond to, and escalate as necessary all government inquiries related to trade compliance.

Manage internal and external audits and disclosures.

The essential requirements of the job include:  

BS or BA degree and a minimum of 7+ years in-house import/export administration and 3+ years of supervisor or management experience.

An in-depth knowledge of WTO, U.S. and non-U.S. Customs classification, valuation and country of origin rules and regulations; international agreements governing customs and trade compliance worldwide; and an acute working knowledge of EU and US export control laws and regulations as they relate to the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) of the U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), U.S. Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), International Traffic and Arms Regulations (ITAR) of the U.S. Department of State and extensive understanding of applicable export, re-export and deemed licensing requirements.

Able to work both individually and in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment

Ability to influence across the company and to interact with persons at all levels. Capable of working independently and collaboratively plus experienced and competent in making good judgment calls.

Business minded. A positive, energetic, self-motivated personality, able to explain complex legal points to business leaders with varying degrees of sophistication about legal matters; able to take business leaders’ concerns and demands into account in how best to pursue legal strategies. Intelligent and articulate with excellent written and verbal communication skills; nimble and quick-minded; able and willing to engage in debate.

Detail oriented and responsive. High accuracy and attention to detail are essential requirements for this position.

Critical thinking and excellent problem solving and analysis skills.

  Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

Domestic and international travel may be required (10-15% annually).

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in: 

Working in a broad Legal or Compliance function in a multinational company.

Working and managing in a matrix structure across different operating companies, business units and functions.

 Working in a (preferably life sciences) manufacturing environment
