The Department of Population Health Sciences of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech announces a search to fill a full-time faculty position as the Director of the Undergraduate Public Health Program at the rank of Tenure or Tenure Track, Assistant or Associate Professor.
The Virginia Tech Public Health Program, accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), is a dynamic and growing program with close connections to a veterinary college, a medical school, an academic health department, and the region. The program deeply embraces Virginia Tech’s motto – Ut Prosim ("That I May Serve") – with signature research and practice areas in One Health and rural/Appalachian health. The program invites applications for the next Director of the Undergraduate Public Health Program, which has awarded the BSPH degree to passionate, engaged students since 2022.
The undergraduate public health program at Virginia Tech continues to develop, with approximately 350 majors and an additional 125 minors at this time. The current curriculum includes core public health courses along with a range of electives (selected both from within and outside the program); the large elective block allows students to tailor their course of study to their professional interests. The program prepares students for a range of community-focused positions or for further study in graduate or professional degree programs; approximately 40% of BSPH graduates pursue additional education following graduation. The program also features a 4+1 option, allowing exceptional undergraduates to pursue their MPH concurrent with their last year of undergraduate course work. The Director will work collaboratively with departmental faculty and leadership, students, related academic departments, and university-wide student service entitites to expand the opportunities and supports available to public health undergraduate students, ensuring their academic, personal, and professional success.
The Director of the Undergraduate Public Health Program will provide leadership and administrative oversight of the undergraduate program. Key responsibilities include (1) serving as a member of the leadership team to coordinate and advance the mission of the public health program; (2) working closely with advising staff and providing supervision to the Director of Advising; (3) reviewing BSPH courses, electives, and co-curricular activities to ensure compliance with CEPH accreditation criteria and ongoing quality improvement; (4) coordinating practicum placements and the BSPH Capstone course; (5) teaching a range of public health courses, including Introduction to Public Health. The Director will also serve on relevant department, college, and university committees; be actively engaged in local, state, and/or national professional service; and conduct scholarly activity in public health or the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Virginia Tech is a vibrant campus nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia. The proximity to rural areas and Central Appalachia, Roanoke (a city of 100,000 with easy access to a regional airport and a train station), and Washington, DC, provides a broad range of opportunities for community-engaged research and practice, as well as an exceptional and affordable quality of life.
