Director & Counsel – US Consumer and Commercial Legal Team

The US Consumer and Commercial Legal Team in the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) is seeking a Director & Counsel to support various aspects of our small business ecosystem, American Express Business Blueprint, including the legal questions that arise relating to the homepage, mobile app, platform and customer journeys. This role will also advise teams responsible for our commercial and consumer cashflow insights products as well as inbound data strategy and governance. This attorney will serve as a thought leader on the subject of data use and portability. 

 

Role & Responsibilities:

Support the evolution of the homepage and mobile app for Amex’s small business online financial services offerings; Counsel business teams managing small business profiles across all small business products; Negotiate and draft agreements with third parties, including data providers; Consult on inbound data projects, help roll out new cashflow management features, support changes to the UX and draft terms, conditions and disclosures; Provide subject matter expertise on laws and regulations related to data use and portability; and Collaborate across the GCO and with business units to facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices.

 

Minimum Qualifications

·       Bachelor’s degree and J.D. from an accredited law school Qualified to practice law in New York in good standing 6 years of relevant experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, organizational and interpersonal skills High level of professionalism and confidentiality, with a commitment to ethical conduct Must have the ability to work independently Must possess excellent writing skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

Direct experience managing complex projects in a regulated, deadline intensive environment Proven ability to act as a trusted advisor and synthesize complex legal issues for business leaders Passion for working towards creative, solution-oriented outcomes that effectively address legal requirements Capacity to be agile and pivot appropriately when challenged with new information or evolving circumstances Ability to gain credibility, manage expectations and generate buy-in through relationship building and communication High-energy, team oriented, self-starter with strong written and interpersonal communication skills, executive presence, and ability to effectively interact at all levels within the organization Must work well in cross-functional team settings and have a keen eye for initiating and driving end to end process improvements to enhance efficiency and productivity Prior experience advising banking and fintech clients

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
