Position Summary The Director of Engineering is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing and enhancing the operational aspects of the Engineering Department. This role involves planning, directing, and coordinating engineering activities to ensure the effective design, development, production, and improvement of projects. The Director will lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and customer outreach specialists focused on electrical distribution construction and design, and will ensuring the optimal use of resources while aligning engineering functions with corporate goals and standards. Responsibilities Project Coordination and Direction: Develop and implement detailed project plans to achieve engineering goals. Direct the integration of technical activities and coordinate with various departments to ensure project alignment. Team Management: Lead and manage a diverse team of design engineers, scientists, and customer outreach specialists. Oversee a drafting team responsible for documenting project configurations and updates. Client and Feasibility Assessment: Evaluate client needs to determine the technical and financial feasibility of proposed solutions. Provide recommendations and adjustments based on feasibility studies. Strategic Alignment: Realign engineering functions with corporate objectives and industry standards. Ensure that departmental goals and activities support overall business strategies. Project Monitoring and Progress Tracking: Monitor and track the progress of engineering projects to ensure timely and successful completion. Address any deviations from project plans and implement corrective actions as needed. Policy and Procedure Development: Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures to enhance departmental efficiency. Ensure adherence to industry best practices and regulatory requirements. Technical Issue Resolution: Identify and resolve technical issues that may arise during project development and execution. Collaboration and Communication: Confer with management and production staff to discuss project specifications and procedural requirements. Facilitate effective communication between teams and external stakeholders. Administrative and Financial Oversight: Perform administrative duties including report writing, expenditure approvals, and material/service procurement. Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations. Goal Setting and Decision Making: Set departmental goals within the framework provided by top management. Make informed decisions regarding project and resource management. Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned or required. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Project Management, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in the electrical distribution construction and design industry with proven supervisory and or management experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Design Manager and AutoCAD Civil. Strong organizational, consultative, and interpersonal skills. Experience in site management, client, and supplier relationship maintenance. Hands-on experience in directing contractors and crews. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and maps. Strong risk management, contingency planning, and decision-making skills. Excellent customer service, communication, and time management skills. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Engineering, Project Management, or a related field. Over 10 years of engineering experience in the construction industry with advanced responsibility in staff and department operations. Distribution Design experience on the Florida Power & Light system. Physical Demands and Work Environment: This position operates in both a professional office environment and on project sites. It requires light exertion, including some filing or lifting (up to 20 pounds). The role involves regular use of standard office equipment such as computers and phones. The ability to see clearly at both close and distant ranges is required.
