Director Hospital Education

Responsibilities:

Customer Relations

Actively seeks to provide education, training and consultation that meet the needs of staff as well as other customers – our patients/clients, clinical leadership, families, referrers, and visitors. Maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, supervisor and those supervised.

Training/Curricula Development

Identifies staff training needs and the requirements of licensing regulatory, and accreditation bodies, and plans, designs, and develops appropriate training program and educational materials to meet those needs. Develops in-service training programming for newly hired clinical staff, including staff who are new to behavioral health care. Modifies curricula in response to evaluations, feedback, new evidence-based practices, regulatory changes, and changing patient populations/programs. Establishes a skills lab for staff’s use in practicing and demonstrating technical skills and competencies.

Staff Management

Responsible for the selection, training, regular evaluation and feedback on job performance, and as necessary, works with HR to discipline and discharge assigned nurse educators and trainers. Finds ways to motivate staff so that they bring enthusiasm and quality focus to their training and staff interactions.

Training Delivery & Administration

Plans and directs the staff development and training for new hospitals staff, transfers, and course refreshers and on-going education and training. May personally deliver training and education programs. Assures focus on evidence-based practices. Oversees the clinical services training program and new staff’s mentoring and unit/program-based orientation that follows. Develops and oversees system to assure the provision of additional training and support to individuals as needed.   Oversees the provision of individualized assessment and training as requested. Oversees the maintenance and reporting of training documentation. Oversees the nurse residency program within the hospital system.

Program Evaluation

Collaborates with clinical unit/program leadership to identify education needs. Manages a system to obtain and review participant feedback to training; incorporates feedback in the design and modifications to staff development and training programs. Develops evaluation criteria and mechanisms to continually assess outcomes and key performance measures.

Maintains Professional/Technical Knowledge

Stays abreast of training and education content and issues, especially as they relate to behavioral healthcare and psychiatric nursing. Attends educational workshops, reviews professional publications, establishes personal networks, and participates in professional associations. Contributes to the creation and revision of policies/practices as requested. Must demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning. May represent clinical services on health system committees and workgroups Provides support for accreditation and regulatory efforts within the organization.

Requirements:

Work requires in-depth knowledge of theories of teaching, learning and evaluation, experience in developing programming in a large healthcare system, excellent communication, presentation, and management skills, and strong critical thinking skills – acquired through a Master’s degree in a related field plus at least 7 years of experience in a behavioral healthcare setting, two of which much be in education and training. Prior experience managing people is required. Strong preference for possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, LCSW-C, or LCPC in the State of Maryland, with substantial experience in education and related areas of instruction in one’s field of expertise. Work requires high level of analytical ability to plan, design and develop curricula to meet organization and unit/program needs, assess training needs of programs and individuals, and develop strategies to effectively teach a variety of adult learners. Work requires advanced interpersonal skills to serve as an effective trainer/coach and consultant, and to successfully work with multi-disciplinary teams. Position requires coordinating and managing in-service education, meeting deadlines, responding promptly to critical organizational and clinical incidents, and managing the demands of multiple projects. As applicable, in keeping with the Maryland Board of Nursing guidelines, all nurses must have an active Maryland nursing license to practice in the state of Maryland, or must have an active license in a compact state that allows them to practice in Maryland, if they reside in that compact state. A multistate licensee who changes primary state of residence to another party state shall apply for a multistate license in the new party state within 60 days. The rule requires that a nurse apply for a new license in a new primary state of residence within 60 days of relocating, it does not require the new license be issued withing 60 days.
