Director I - Employment Counsel

Job Purpose:

The Corporate Counsel is responsible for advising the business on all employment and labor issues and related matters as well as providing general legal support for commercial matters. The Corporate Counsel reports to the Chief Legal Officer and advises senior management on employment/labor relations strategies and implementation; ensures legal compliance with federal, state, and local laws; manages employment/labor disputes and litigation; and engages and oversees the work of outside counsel when necessary.

 

Essential Functions:

Provide in-house legal counsel on labor and employment-related matters, including, but not limited to, human resources issues, wage and hour law, workers' compensation, unemployment, and other state agency claims, labor relations, employee benefits, FMLA, employment agreements, and policy-related issues Manage all employment/labor related disputes, investigations, and litigation including responding to complaints, demand letters, and administrative charges; participate in mediations, arbitrations, administrative hearings and litigation; and manage outside counsel as needed Summarize and report on status of pending litigation, mediations, arbitrations, and hearings Work with Chief Legal Officer to judge the merits of cases filed against or on behalf of the company and advise on settlements of disputes as appropriate Support the development of corporate policies, procedures, and programs to ensure legal compliance with federal, state, and local laws Review and report on labor and employment related statutory and regulatory developments Prepare and present training materials on employment and labor issues to HR and leadership Serve as a key lawyer/legal advisor on major business transactions Work collaboratively with senior leadership to mitigate risk and address employment/labor issues Provide other legal support services as needed

 

Education:

Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school

 

Licensure:

Must hold active license to practice law in one US jurisdiction and be able to obtain Ohio corporate counsel status

 

Experience:

Required: At least 3-5 years of experience in employment/labor law

Preferred: Experience in Privacy law; Cybersecurity law; Contract law; Real Estate; Telecommunications

Highly ethical, able to maintain confidentiality, and handle highly-sensitive information Possess executive presence with strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to manage heavy workload in a high-pressure environment Proactive in providing counsel to clients Ability to clearly articulate recommendations Ability to cross think and determine who should be kept informed Self-starter with good business sense and a sense of urgency, honesty, and fairness Self-confident and inspires confidence from clients
