The Laboratory Director at Mount Auburn Hospital is responsible for leading all clinical laboratory operations, with a primary focus on fostering a strong, collaborative relationship with leadership at BIDMC, including the COO, Chief Administrative Officer for Pathology, and Director of Laboratory Services. This role plays a critical part in advancing laboratory operations and care standards within the Metro Boston Division of Beth Israel Lahey Health, working to drive efficiencies, standardize processes, and achieve economies of scale across the network. The Laboratory Director also oversees the daily operations, quality standards, and regulatory compliance of Mount Auburn’s laboratory services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, responsive laboratory services and alignment with hospital and system-wide goals.
**Job Description:**
**Key Responsibilities:**
- System-Wide Integration and Collaboration: Develop and maintain a strong partnership with BIDMC leadership, including the COO, Chief Administrative Officer for Pathology, and Director of Laboratory Services, to align operational and quality initiatives across the Metro Boston Division. Represent Mount Auburn Hospital’s laboratory interests on Metro Boston Laboratory committees and actively participate in shared strategic planning to enhance care, efficiency, and resource utilization across the system.
+ Ensures that the Laboratory provides quality service consistent with fiscal objectives set forth by the Administration. Integrates Laboratory services within the organization and the group medical practices.
+ Serves as administrative representative on various system and hospital committees as assigned, e.g., Environmental Safety Committee or CIRG; participates in department head meetings and conducts regular meetings of Laboratory supervisory personnel.
- Operational Leadership: Lead all laboratory functions, including Clinical Chemistry,
Hematology/Coagulation, Immunology, Transfusion Services, Microbiology, Pathology, and Specimen Collection, ensuring that services are consistently high-quality and aligned with institutional goals.Develops and implements system for maintaining department records and reports for the Medical Director and Administration.
+ Periodically reviews all Laboratory methods and procedures; recommends and implements new approaches to maximize efficiency of the Laboratory and the quality of service provided.
+ Maintains and expands current knowledge in area of responsibility.
+ Continuously strives to improve productivity and service through optimal use of technical and human resources and through process improvement and work redesign.
+ Supports and participates in the hospital's commitment to Continuous Improvement. Through the development and use of objective data, plans, implements, and evaluates processes that result in the delivery of integrated services.
+ Ensures that the laboratory is in compliance with applicable rules and regulations of CMS via the
+ College of American Pathologists, DPH, and The Joint Commission.
+ Responsible for the preparation and timely submission of applications and other reports as necessary for maintenance or renewal of licensure/accreditation.
+ Responsible for assuring requirements for licensure/accreditation are met
+ Directs participation in proficiency testing programs as required by Pathology Staff
+ Assures proper storage, handling, repair and maintenance of Laboratory facilities, equipment and supplies.
+ Audits and evaluates continuous quality improvements, establishes best practices and benchmark processes.
+ Establish strategic short and long term goals and objectives for laboratory services that align with the BIDMC System.
+ Serves as a liaison between Pathologists, staff, and administration and helps to facilitate a collaborative approach, effective communication and sense of team.
- Recruitment and Staff Development: Manage and lead recruitment efforts, training, and performance management of laboratory staff to build a skilled, motivated workforce. Oversee staffing models, working closely with departmental leaders to ensure appropriate staffing levels and competencies across laboratory services.
+ Staffs, schedules, and provides for training of technologists and support staff; participates with pathologists in selecting and evaluating supervisory personnel; and recommends and implements employee promotions, employee changes of status, and dismissals. Is responsible for the implementation of personnel policies established by hospital and Laboratory administration. Indirectly supervises entire Laboratory staff through subordinate supervisors.
+ Initiates an ongoing and relevant continuing education program for all Laboratory personnel andprovides sufficient documentation thereof. Creates and sustains an environment in which employees are empowered to independently solve problems and to actively participate in problem-solving activities.
+ Maintains effective communications with laboratory staff and other hospital departments to assure efficient and effective performance of the laboratory.
+ Determines he qualifications and competence of personnel who provide laboratory patient care services.
+ Evaluates the effectiveness of staff development and facilitates the reduction of employee turnover, absenteeism and occupational injuries.
+ Responsible for recruiting, interviewing and the selection of Laboratory personnel
- Budget and Financial Management: Develop, manage, and monitor the laboratory’s operational and capital budgets to ensure cost-effectiveness and fiscal responsibility.
+ •Oversees the preparation of the Laboratory operating and capital budgets with supervisors and pathologists; presents budget with Chief of Pathology to the Vice
+ President / COO; approves and verifies all debits; and is accountable for administering all travel expenses, seminar costs, and tuition reimbursement. Analyzes Laboratory charges annually for reimbursement purposes; establishes at all levels an awareness of cost containment and productivity.
+ Assists in the development of realistic business plans to enhance the cost-effectiveness of the
+ Laboratory, both short and long-term, focusing on eliminating waste, increasing efficiency in operations, controlling costs, marketing and sales, and profitability of all objectives achieved.
+ Manages activities associated with annual operating and capital budget preparations, new business and market developments.
+ Responsible for control of routine operating expenses of the department, reviews and approves vendor invoices for equipment, supplies and services, assures minimum but adequate inventory of needed materials.
- Quality and Regulatory Compliance: Direct quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with all regulatory standards, including CAP, CLIA, OSHA, and JCAHO. Collaborate with the Quality Director and other regulatory bodies to ensure laboratory excellence and safety.
+ Co-chair, along with Laboratory Medical Director, the Laboratory Quality Improvement
+ Committee.
+ Coordinates the preparation for inspection and accreditation processes conducted by the
+ College of American Pathologists and other professional and regulatory agencies.
+ Is responsible for ensuring adherence by Laboratory personnel to Fire and Safety Standards in
+ accordance with codes established by OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
+ Ensures standardization of laboratory policies in accordance with BILH.
- Strategic Planning: In collaboration with Mount Auburn’s executive leadership and BIDMC’s laboratory
+ leaders, develop and implement strategic plans that drive innovation, improve patient outcomes, and
+ align with the broader mission of both institutions.
- Patient-Centered Service: Promote a culture of excellence in patient-centered service delivery, ensuring laboratory operations are responsive and uphold the values of Mount Auburn and Beth Israel Lahey Health.
+ Initiates and maintains good communications and working relationships between the Laboratory and other departments of the hospital. Monitors, analyzes, and responds to customer service issues appropriately and in a timely manner.
**Qualifications:**
**Education:** Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field is required; an advanced degree in Clinical Sciences, Healthcare Administration, or Business (M.S., M.H.A., or M.B.A.) is preferred.
**Experience:** Minimum of four years in a large clinical laboratory setting with at least two years in a
managerial role.
**Skills:** Strong analytical and financial skills for budgeting and strategic planning, with excellent
interpersonal and leadership abilities to build collaborative relationships across departments and with BIDMC leadership.
