Under the direction of the Vice President of Major Gifts, the Director of Major Gifts is responsible for developing, organizing and managing all fundraising strategies and activities within one of the Henry Ford Health System’s Centers of Excellence.
Henry Ford Health (HFH) is growing its fundraising team and is looking to fill a leadership position with an experienced major gift fundraiser and leader. This position will enjoy the excitement of playing a significant role in a comprehensive fundraising campaign. This campaign will support a variety of new projects including the $250 million research building being constructed in partnership with Michigan State University and the $1.8 billion flagship academic medical center in Detroit.
Under the direction of the Vice President of Major Gifts, the Director of Major Gifts is responsible for developing, organizing and managing all fundraising strategies and activities within the regional major gift team. This position will be the lead fundraiser for a major service line, program or hospital and will also provide leadership to a regional team of major gift officer(s). This assignment will provide substantial opportunity for fundraising success and leadership during an exciting time in Henry Ford Health’s history. A competitive compensation package will be commensurate with experience.
The Director of Major Gifts will be responsible for securing major gifts ($50,000 commitments and above) for Henry Ford Health. This position works closely with Development Office staff, Department/Program leadership, physician leadership, volunteers and donor advisors to identify prospects and develop solicitation strategies for major gift prospects.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of Major Gifts develops and implements fundraising plans for one of our service lines or hospitals. Fundraising plans include annual giving activities, major gifts, cultivation activities, special events, planned giving, stewardship/donor recognition activities, prospect research, proposal writing directed toward the capital and programmatic needs for the service line or hospital. This position requires the ability to identify, cultivate and solicit major donors for $50,000 and above gifts. This position also requires supervisory responsibilities for a team of major gift officers across the Henry Ford Health regional hospitals.
+ Solicits donations for Henry Ford Health projects from various sources including individuals, foundations, and corporations.
+ Works to identify giving opportunities within their department or region to include, but not limited to, both capital and programmatic needs.
+ Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations.
+ Oversees fundraising events for designated areas of responsibility as needed. Works closely with volunteers, Special Events Team and department leadership in the planning and execution of special events.
+ As a seasoned professional, works as a member of the department’s senior leadership team and is involved in the overall strategic plan for the department.
+ Works closely with medical leadership to identify grateful patients as potential major gift donors whose interests coincide with Henry Ford Health System. Works closely with other leadership to leverage community relationships they have established with individuals, volunteers, corporations and other community partners. Works with research manager to research relationship to HFHS, interests including those outside of HFHS, giving history, gift ranges, giving potential and similar information of current and prospective donors, using a wide variety of print and electronic reference sources.
+ Creates strategies and manages relationships with current and prospective major gift donors; facilitates meetings between current and prospective donors and HFHS physicians, community physicians and leadership; plans strategy for prospect cultivation and donor recognition events.
+ Working closely with system and medical leadership to identify and develop case statements representing product lines that match Henry Ford Health System priorities; works with appropriate internal and external staff to develop written case statements that match System priorities with donor interests.
+ Spends approximately 70% of time interacting with donors, volunteers, community leaders, hospital leaders and prospective donors. Manages a portfolio of approximately 80-100 prospects.
+ Engages appropriate major gift donors and prospects in the programs at Henry Ford Health. Provides on-going information on relevant programs and overall strategies that may be a funding fit; provides on-going information on use and impact of gifts; engages donors and prospects in System activities and ensures proper recognition of all major gifts; plans targeted outreach activities aimed at increasing the donor pool and cultivating/stewarding existing prospects; creates programs to educate donors on giving to health care and how philanthropy helps the System achieve its goals; cultivates and educates prospects and donors through personal visits and written and oral communications.
+ Develops a proposal strategy for major gift solicitations from individuals, corporations and foundations which clearly articulate the need for a contribution and links this need to the prospective donors' giving interests.
+ Assists in prioritizing proposals and may research, write and edit correspondence to current and prospective donors including introduction letters, gift acknowledgments and reports on the use of grant funds.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Minimum of Bachelor's degree from four-year College.
+ Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in major gift fundraising, planned gift fundraising or related sales experience is required.
+ Experience securing six-figure and seven-figure gifts is required. Experience in raising high six-figure and seven (7) figure gifts is preferred.
+ Leadership or direct management experience within a development or sales organization is preferred.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
+ Works well with donors, volunteers, executive leadership, medical group leadership, development peers and other administrators. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, emotional intelligence, relationship building skills, organizational skills and solid knowledge of fundraising. Must be guided by a compelling “client/customer” orientation and strategic thinking. Computer skills are essential and include word processing, spreadsheet creation/management, database management, fundraising software and other relevant software packages.
