The Director of Nursing Operations supports the practice of Nursing at Brooks Hospital by ensuring consistency in the standard of practice across the clinical settings. As a member of the Brooks leadership team, the Director of Nursing supports and facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of care. This includes a nursing environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care, education, and research is promoted and achieved, and evidence-based nursing practice is facilitated. The Director of Nursing ensures the continued advancement of the profession of nursing at Brooks. Demonstrates a commitment to create a nursing culture, such as Magnet, to achieve higher quality indicators, elevate nursing services, clinical outcomes and patient care delivery systems.
Job Responsibilities:
SUPPORTS the activities of the Nursing Department:
Supports nursing practice and development to include the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the professional practice model, nursing education, quality improvement and infection prevention. Represents Brooks in the community, state and region of nursing leaders. Participates in planning of physical facilities and utilization of space that affect management of the Nursing Practice. Ensures a staffing system based upon patient and family needs, and types and preparation of workers for the in-patient hospital. (RNs, LPNs, CNAs and support staff.) In collaboration with Hospital Administrator, designs and recommends hospital-wide nurse staffing standards. Plans for the utilization of personnel for maximum efficiency and quality of patient care. Oversees the management of all central, hospital wide nursing functions, including PRN pool. Assists the CNO, IP Nursing in maintaining up-to-date job descriptions and performance evaluation criteria that define requirements, competencies, responsibilities and functions of the positions and determines their placement within the organizational structure and provides for remuneration based on performance. Collaborates with clinical department heads in developing budgets before submission to the Hospital Administrator. Participates in intra- and inter-departmental planning for improvement of patient care. Oversees standards of safe nursing practice. Collaborate with programs in implementing recommended standards of safe and effective nursing practice. Interviews, verifies credentials and selects personnel for central Nursing positions. Collaborates with hospital leaders in the selection of staff for key program nursing positions. Promotes, transfers and terminates nursing employees. Shares committee service as appropriate with the VP of Nursing to ensure nursing is represented. Performs such other functions related to this classification of job as assigned by the VP of Nursing. Oversees the nursing department in the absence of the VP of Nursing.
SUPERVISES, EVALUATES AND CONTROLS THE NURSING PRACTICE:
Works with CNO, IP Nursing to evaluate service rendered by Nursing including quality of nursing care, competency of personnel and efficiency of operation. Supports feedback system that encourages nursing staff to report concerns regarding professional practice or behavioral issues. Assists in developing an evaluation/performance management program. Assists in development of a nursing education program in collaboration with the Department of Learning. Collaborates with the programs in controlling expenditures related to time utilization, personnel, equipment and supplies. Participates in the development of specialty program policies and procedures related to nursing functions. Investigates complaints of dissatisfaction regarding nursing service rendered and takes appropriate action. Supports and facilitates interdisciplinary-shared governance process.STAFF INTERACTION:
Makes decisions and takes actions that consider needs of the hospital nursing staff. Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs and motivations of staff and works to maintain a friendly working environment. Volunteers to help staff in other departments as well as within the hospital. Graduate of a state-licensed accredited school of professional nursing and licensed to practice as an RN in the state of Florida. A master’s degree (or current enrollment in master’s program) is required. Either the baccalaureate or master’s degree must be in Nursing (BSN or MSN). CRRN required within 12 months of hire. At least five years’ experience in a management position. Strong leadership ability. Able to demonstrate financial, quality and patient satisfaction outcomes. Strong advocate of the interdisciplinary model and shared governance organizational structure. Experience with change management and ability to support nursing practice within a programmatic structure.
