Director of Afterschool & Recreation

Homes for the Homeless, Inc., is actively seeking a Director of Afterschool & Recreation, to lead our program for families with children experiencing homelessness. The Director will be assigned to manage the day-to-day operations of a DYCD after-school Program located in a Family Shelter in Queens, NY. This role is vital in providing a safe, engaging, and supportive environment that promotes the well-being and development of children. The Director will oversee program development, staff management, and compliance with relevant regulations, ensuring that our services meet the unique needs of our families.

ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS, INC. 

Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Oversee all planning, implementation, evaluation, and staffing operational aspects of a DOHM/ DYCD regulated Program.Maintain accurate records and documentation set by DOHM, OCFS/SACC Regulations and DYCD for agencies inspections, audits, and evaluations.Attend ongoing trainings on compliance standards, safety protocols, and best practices to ensure a thorough understanding of regulations.Conduct workshops and informational sessions to keep staff informed about any updates in DOH and DYCD mandates.Knowledge navigating DYCD Connect: Ensures appropriate record keeping and reporting of all youth attendance and related data.Design and execute comprehensive recruitment plans to meet and exceed ROP enrollment and attendance targets. Design/Implement innovative and age-appropriate curriculums, enrichment activities and theme-based projects that are child-led. Ensuring that programming reflects the interests and choices of the children plus maintains an emotionally and physically safe environment.Collaborate with staff to develop workscopes that outline clear learning objectives and outcomes for each activity, aligning with DYCD guidelines.Organize special events that showcase student achievements through skill-driven sports and fitness activities, arts education, culturally enriching field trips, and wellness activities. Create and facilitate opportunities for parental involvement, including parent orientations, while fostering strong relationships with families.This position requires occasional evening and weekend work to accommodate program schedules and community events.Serve as the primary point of contact for communication and collaboration with city agencies and other relevant stakeholders.Perform other duties as assigned by the Onsite Supervisor to support program operations and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Bachelor’s Degree in (Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation, or a related field with at least 13 credits in education.) AND; Two years direct experience working with children less than 13 years of age, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity in afterschool or recreation programs.Demonstrate competency in youth development and experience working with middle school-aged children.Experience working with low-income and at-risk youth. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and planning skills. Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
