The Role

 

The Director of Architecture is a strategic leadership position, serving as a champion for the quality of our collective built work, and leading the continuous elevation of our technical design capability, talent, resources, processes, and outcomes. The Director of Architecture is a practicing Architect with extensive experience in the detailed development of complex technical building solutions, with a particular focus on leveraging technology in design.  The Director of Architecture will imagine, create, and develop a long-term vision for the continued advancement of the quality of our firm’s technical design solutions. This continued evolution of the firm’s approach to technical delivery, quality and sophistication needed to achieve that vision, will be their primary responsibility. This role will report to the CEO and work alongside other executives including our Market Sector Leaders, our firm Design Director, and Sustainability Director to achieve these objectives and continue to elevate Corgan’s brand and position in the industry.

 

This role will require a broad knowledge of the design and construction industry, extensive experience in architectural detailing, buildings systems coordination and integration, document production and the delivery of Architecture and Interior Design services.  This role will also require a thorough understanding of the current and emerging technologies, resources and tools used in architectural design and documentation, particularly those used in enabling quality, accuracy, efficiency, and consistency.  A primary goal of this position is to challenge ourselves to be more technically advanced as Architects and Interior Designers, to explore new building systems and technologies to improve building performance, to advance the efficiency and quality of product delivery, support the design vision on our projects and improve the sustainability and constructability of our designs.

 

Firmwide technical Quality Assurance and Quality Control will be among their primary responsibilities.  Critical to this role is the ability to stay current with industry trends and best practices as well as an innate understanding of risk management strategies.  The Director of Architecture will identify risks and liabilities associated with technical delivery of our services, develop actionable risk mitigation strategies, and set accountability measures to help track firm progress on those items. 

 

The Director of Architecture will lead the continuous improvement of our Technical Track, providing technical mentorship across the firm at all levels of professional development. The Director of Architecture will partner with other leaders in the firm to continue the development of our internal technical resources in areas such as project specifications, QA/QC processes and procedures, systems integration, and materials research and fabrication. This includes providing leadership, strategic direction, mentorship, annual budgeting, and hiring oversight for the firm’s technical resources.

 

The Director of Architecture will chair the firm’s Technical Council, providing leadership and guidance to all market sectors. This includes equipping and empowering those leaders with the tools and guidance they need to improve the work produced in their sectors and locations, driving the group towards decisions on technical practice issues, promoting quality management practices, ensuring that the technical resources provided by the firm are applied to project work, and that our brand and reputation is being honored and elevated across the organization.

 

The Candidate

 

The ideal candidate for this role is a forward-thinking individual with strong leadership, technical and team development skills along with demonstrated success in the field of Architecture. The Director of Architecture should have demonstrated experience in leading organizational change, with regular and successful interaction with staff of all levels and must possess a flexible attitude with the ability to encourage collaboration in a team environment.  

Responsibilities Understand project documentation practices in all disciplines and major building typologiesUnderstand Specifications integrationCode compliance reviews and consultationIntegrate internal building design subject matter expertise (acoustics, hardware, etc.)Identify, evaluate and coordinate subconsultant roles and servicesBe a creative problem solver, able to define several solutions and serve internal stakeholdersAnalyze current processes and find areas of needed efficiencies (Observer/Assessor)Have a deep understanding of BIM processes, capabilities and emerging computational tools (Revit, BIM, Shared Collaboration Platforms, common data environments, and other data platforms).Support the development of internal project controls, processes and proceduresStay current with industry trends and best practices as well as an innate understanding of risk management strategiesServe as a firm resource for technical design support partnering and mentoring with project teams to develop strategies within projects by providing leadership, guidance, and support to meet built environment goals.Identify industry trends and propose best practices as they relate to technical design.Participate in industry events, associations and serve as the firm representative in community and network events related to technical design and design technology.Conduct or provide for Independent Technical Drawing Reviews, Constructability Reviews, Coordination Reviews or Peer Reviews as needed in conjunction with project principals

 

Qualifications 15+ years of experience in ArchitectureBachelors’ degree required.Architectural Registration required.Proficiency and expertise in the full range of architectural building systems such as enclosures, moisture migration, energy efficiency, roofing systems, curtainwall assemblies and building systems integrationStrong knowledge and application of national building codes and regulationsExperience with international projects, codes and building systems desiredStrong knowledge of specifications development and integrationStrong experience in cost estimating and construction administrationExcellent communication skills, including written, graphic, and verbal presentation skills.Working knowledge of design softwares (Revit, Sketchup, Rhino, Grasshopper, etc.), Coordination tools (Navisworks), Information Management Tools (Newforma, ProCore), Visualization tools (Enscape, Affinity), Cloud Tools (Autodesk Construction Cloud)Proficiency required:Revit/BIM project deliveryProject Information Management (Newforma/Procore)Awareness desired:Modeling tools (Sketchup/Rhino 3d/Enscape)Emerging AI ToolsScripting tools ((Python/Grasshopper/Dynamo)Staffing methodologies (Project Planner/Planify)Strong analysis and problem-solving skills.Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and assess priorities effectively.Ability to work closely with multiple project roles and teams.

Base Salary Range: $150,000- $228,000 annually – Based on geographical location.

 

The estimate range represents the general base salary range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. In addition, base salary is not inclusive of total compensation.
