Collegiate Sports The Opportunity I Maryville College seeks an inspirational and experienced Director of Athletics (“AD”) who will lead a strong intercollegiate athletics program that reflects the NCAA Division III philosophy of athletics as an integral part of students’ overall educational experiences. The College seeks an AD who will embrace and continue the positive trajectory that the athletics program has experienced in recent years, including numerous facility enhancements, notable coaching hires, and the impending transition to the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). The AD reports to the College President and is responsible for overall leadership and management of the College’s Division of Athletics.

Responsibilities

Provide strategic and visionary leadership and comprehensive management, supporting goals of competitive success, outstanding student-athlete experiences, philanthropic support, compliance, responsible fiscal practices, and robust community engagement. Recruit, mentor, lead, and retain talented staff and coaches who are committed to excellence, inclusion, student-athlete welfare, professionalism, and success of all programs. Act as a fundraiser for Athletics while working collaboratively with coaches and Advancement staff to enhance resources and support for its intercollegiate athletics programs. Actively build and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues across campus, within the local community, as well as regionally/nationally. Develop, implement, and monitor division policies/procedures that promote best practices, professional development, fiscal responsibility, facility management, and exceptional service. Serve on the President’s Cabinet, attending all meetings, and liaise with the Board of Directors; and Perform other duties, as assigned by the College President.

Preferred Qualifications     

Bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree or other post-graduate degree is preferred, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of five years of progressive work experience in intercollegiate athletics administration, including a minimum of three years leading and/or supervising the work of others. Demonstrated record of administrative leadership/accomplishment in college/university athletics, preferably at the NCAA Division III level, including visionary, strategic, and operational leadership; successful fundraising; evidence of innovation; and effective resource management. Leadership style that is positive, credible, inclusive, collaborative, and demonstrative of emotional intelligence and maturity, as well as the highest standards of honesty and integrity. Superior communication and relationship-building skills, experience in program development and assessment, including risk management, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a high degree of cultural competence, demonstrating respect for the diversity of identities and experiences. Demonstrated ability to support the ongoing work and development of the administrative and coaching staff through effectively setting, prioritizing, managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and working cooperatively within a team environment. Knowledge of the principles of intercollegiate athletics administration, budgeting, personnel management, NCAA rules and regulations, conference expectations, Title IX compliance, gender equity, and diversity. An appreciation for the importance of developing student-athletes who are both outstanding performers as well as individuals of impeccable character. High political and financial acumen, with the ability to navigate and manage the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics and the role it plays within higher education. Ability to promote the core values of the College and the role of athletics in its overall mission.
