Director of Collections, Insurance

The Director of Collections is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the Collections process for the multiple entities under the SPG portfolio of companies. This role combines technical expertise in enhancing cash flow, minimizing bad debt, and optimizing collections systems with the leadership needed to manage cross-functional teams, oversee the dispute resolution process with various insurance carriers, retail agents and brokers, and maintain compliance with insurance regulations and company policies.

The current Collections team operates under Accounting supervision and consists of Nashville based onshore resources and a 3rd party outsourced team. The Director of Collections will play a key role in transitioning the existing Collections team into a new Collection Center of Excellence (COE) organizational structure under the supervision of Operations leadership to better align with Billing and Operational teams and processes. During this transition, the Director of Collections will be responsible for establishing the optimal organizational structure of the team and upgrading future state systems and tools used in the Collections process. In this capacity, the Director will align collections strategies with broader business objectives, driving operational efficiencies while developing a high-performing collections team to achieve financial targets.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Collections Strategy: Develop and implement specialized strategies by division / entity to optimize collections, reduce outstanding receivables, and streamline processes in accordance with leading Collections practices.

Oversee SPG Collections Teams: Supervise and mentor collections managers and supervisors, ensuring the team is equipped to handle both policyholder, carrier, agent, broker and third-party collections.  Train teams on leading practices for Collections processes and systems usage.

Oversee 3rd party Outsourced Team: Manage offshore 3rd party vendor that assists with sending monthly statements and other customer notifications, and optimize their capacity utilization and forecasting of future support needs.

Premium and Claims Collections: Ensure timely collection of premium payments, collaborate with underwriters to manage claims-related collections, and work closely with policyholders, carriers and retail agents / brokers on billing disputes.

Resolve High-Impact Disputes: Oversee the resolution of escalated and complex collections cases, including policy disputes, policy cancellations, engaging 3rd party collections agencies, and litigation matters.

Leverage Technology: Utilize and recommend collections technology to automate processes, enhance operational efficiency, and improve accuracy in financial reporting.

Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with Underwriting, Claims, Billing, Finance, and Legal departments to align collections strategies with broader business goals, ensuring seamless operations.

Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with insurance-specific regulations (e.g., state insurance laws), financial practices, and company policies. Stay updated on industry standards and Collections practices in the insurance sector.

Improve Systems & Processes: Identify opportunities to upgrade systems, implement process enhancements, and integrate collections tools to support the unique financial dynamics of collections in the specialty insurance industry.

Monitor Aging Balances: Regularly review aging reports and provide actionable insights on delinquent accounts, ensuring minimal write-offs and an optimal customer contact cycle.

Reporting and Metrics: Set and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for collections activities, providing regular reports to senior leadership on financial performance, recovery rates, and process improvements.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration (MBA preferred).

Minimum of 10 years of experience in collections management, with a strong preference for those in the insurance or financial services sector.

In-depth knowledge of specialty insurance collections, including claims, premium payment recovery, and regulatory compliance preferred.

Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex collections strategies and customer relationships.

Experience with collections software, billing systems, and financial reporting tools.

Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and data analysis abilities to guide strategy and performance improvements.

Familiarity with industry regulations (NAIC standards, state-specific insurance laws) and the ability to implement regulatory adherence in collections activities.

Excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, and customer service skills tailored to the nuances of specialty insurance clients.

Disclosure required under applicable state or municipality regulations: The expected salary range for this position is $150,000 to $160,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
