This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage. DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Police Department HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm LOCATION: 716 W 4th Avenue Example of Duties Responsible for collaborating with community relations and public affairs for the Anchorage Police Department including messages, analyses, relationship-building and strategic public and community relations support for APD programs and operations. May support the media needs of other public safety departments, as needed. Works with the Chief of Police, Administration, to create the department's "brand" and project it into the public's consciousness. Collaborates with all levels of department, city employees and related community partners on a day-to-day execution of police and public media relations activities. Requires considerable independent discretion in decision making. Perform other required duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and nine (9) years of experience conducting research, investigations, litigation, report writing, program management, and/or program support. OR Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting or a similar discipline, and seven (7) years of experience conducting research, investigations, litigation, report writing, program management, and/or program support. OR Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Accounting or a similar discipline, and five (5) years of experience conducting research, investigations, litigation, report writing, program management, and/or program support. OR Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting or a similar discipline, and three (3) years of experience conducting research, investigations, litigation, report writing, program management, and/or program support. Must possess and or obtain: Valid State of Alaska driver's license with satisfactory driving record. Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire. Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check within 6 months of hire. Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within thirty(30) days of hire. Must posses the ability to: Effectively able to operate a personal computer and have working knowledge of MS Office software to include MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Outlook, as well as community relations databases. Preference: Communications relations/Journalism/Marketing/public relations experience. At least four years of experience in community relations or related field. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Outstanding interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to work well under pressure and manage sensitive or controversial subjects with tact, kindness, and professionalism.
