Research, teaching and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture. Tenure/Tenure Track?No % Research0 % Teaching30 % Service30 (15% extension & 15% outreach) % Administration40 To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by 11:59pm (MT) on02/17/2025 Number of Vacancies Desired Start Date Position End Date Position Summary The Director of Competitive Judging Teams and Livestock Judging Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the operations of all competitive livestock and food animal judging teams in the Department of Animal Sciences to increase student participation, institutional competitiveness, and maximize students’ success. This includes but is not limited to Livestock, Meat, Dairy, Wool, and Meat Animal Evaluation. The intent of this role is to support students, coaches, faculty and staff to ensure a more coordinated approach that elevates CSU presence and performance at contests with the goal of increasing student recruitment to and success at CSU . Further, based on the candidate’s expertise, this role is anticipated to provide oversight for the animal sciences internship program to connect undergraduates with industry opportunities. This role will have substantial visibility with CSU alumni and stakeholders to increase our outreach and impact around the state, nation, and world. This role will require strong skills and experience in relationship building, strategic development, organization, fundraising, and competition programs. The successful candidate will have dynamic leadership skills who can stay focused on the mission and excel in an environment with conflicting pressures where prioritization of students is essential. In addition to the role of Director, this position will be expected to advise, coordinate, coach, and fund-raise for intercollegiate livestock judging activities, provide undergraduate animal science instruction, assist with Colorado youth extension and livestock judging programs, and be active in the recruiting programs of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Courses to be taught include the existing Introduction to Livestock Evaluation and Advanced Livestock Evaluation. Involvement in the Department is expected and teaching other potential courses can be negotiated depending on the skills and interests of the candidate. The successful applicant will have access to College of Agricultural Sciences and AES teaching herds, flocks, and livestock facilities to help facilitate longevity of the livestock judging program. The position will have the support from existing administrative coordinators and one graduate student assistantship to ensure this position’s success. As the program gains additional success, recognition, and support administrative support and available graduate student assistantships will be evaluated. Travel to support competitive teams at major contests will be expected. The CSU main campus is in close proximity to a wide cross-section of livestock production systems (i.e., beef cattle and sheep operations ranging from seedstock to growing and finishing). The campus sits at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Northern Colorado and offers excellent access to many venues for outdoor interests, air transportation, and the Denver Metro Area, which includes several national animal agriculture organizations and facilities, most notably, the National Western Stock Show. Conditions of EmploymentPre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires), Valid Driver’s License Required Job Qualifications + Master’s in Animal Science or a closely-related field from an accredited institution, and 5 years of experience working in animal agriculture. + Experience with coaching and competing on intercollegiate livestock judging teams. + Evidence of excellent communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal). + Proven track record of establishing and maintaining external and internal professional relationships. + Experience managing budgets and /or fundraising. + Experience engaging and motivating employees and/or students through collaboration, evaluation, consistency, and strong leadership. + Demonstrated evidence of working with diverse audiences and teams. Preferred Job Qualifications + PhD in Animal Science or a closely related field. + Experience as a head or assistant senior college livestock judging team. + Demonstrated proficiency in recruiting students for intercollegiate teams. + Experience in youth outreach and assisting youth livestock educational programs. + Demonstrated aptitude and capability to create, organize, and teach undergraduate courses in animal science and livestock production. + Experience with student internship programs.
