Fugees Family, Inc. is seeking a high-performing and proactive leader to serve as Development Director. This position will work closely with Fugees’ Founder and Chief Executive Officer to drive and support the growth of Fugees Family. Our organization is rapidly expanding as we work towards advancing educational justice for refugee and immigrant youth nationwide and becoming the national cause of choice for refugee and immigrant youth support and education. This is an excellent opportunity for an established development professional seeking to accelerate their career, with a chance to lead the overall vision, strategy, and execution of development efforts for a rapidly growing and highly reputable organization. This full-time position is hybrid and located in Atlanta, GA. Up to 25% of travel will be required.
Overview
Fugees Family, Inc. is looking for an energetic, dynamic, and dedicated individual with a proven track record in securing and managing up to seven-figure charitable gifts and interacting with high-net-worth donors and C-level executives to serve as the Development Director for the entire Fugees Family network. The Development Director is a key member of the leadership team, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and head of Advancement to enhance and grow our development strategy and team. Reporting to the head of advancement, the Development Director also works closely with the grant writers, development manager, and communications teams to support the articulation of program and project descriptions, objectives, and expected impacts. Occasionally, the Director will draft personal correspondence at the executive-level in service of the CEO.
As Fugees Family is in the process of rapid national expansion, the Development Director will
be integral to helping build a community that can help fuel growth while also curating meaningful relationships with high-net-worth funders and philanthropic foundations. Through this work, the Director will make a direct and lasting impact on educational equity for refugee and English Language Learner students, as well our organizational culture, expansion, and stewardship—flipping the script on the United States Education system.

Fugees Family, Inc. is a national 501(c)(3) charitable organization and operator of the Fugees Academies, a network of independent, community-based middle and high schools which emphasize the academic and character development of refugee and immigrant youth. Fugees Academies empower the most vulnerable of students – oftentimes child survivors of war – to become independent thinkers and high-achieving scholars. Our student body represents nearly 40 different countries, including Burundi, Iraq, Central African Republic, and Burma. Our staff are nearly as diverse as our students, with 80 percent identifying as BIPOC.
The organization is headquartered in Columbus, OH with other Fugees Academy locations in Atlanta, GA. Key Responsibilities:
+ Co-lead the organization’s efforts to quickly and sustainably grow and to become the national cause of choice for refugee youth support and education.
+ Develop and lead the vision, strategy and execution for all development initiatives, cultivating new revenue streams and avenues for fundraising while furthering the mission of Fugees.
+ Create and implement a national overall development strategy with key milestones and metrics and including innovative approaches to engage new prospects and strengthen donor relationships across individual, foundation and corporate giving.
+ Establish and manage all fundraising priorities and activities for the CEO and Board of Directors, consistently following up and ensuring timely execution.
+ Assess progress against funding targets to inform pursuit of emerging opportunities, determine risks, and create contingencies.
+ Assess current systems, processes, and procedures and, where necessary, design and implement new systems, processes, and procedures that efficiently support the organization and enhance donor experience.
+ Work with the head of Advancement to develop complementary communications and marketing priorities and materials to enhance the organization’s reach and reputation and support all fundraising activities.
+ Determine additional staffing needs, hiring and managing a team of development staff and contractors to reach results.
+ Build the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the development team in areas including annual giving, major gifts, events, donor relations, community partnerships, grants, communications and stewardship.
+ Edit and/or review written proposals, letters and other communications for individual, corporate and foundation donors and grant-makers.
+ Provide consistent follow-up after meetings, events and other activities to secure commitments or move relationships forward.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
+ Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
+ Minimum of eight years working for a nonprofit and/or educational institution; at least five years of direct development experience required.
+ Highly developed strategic planning and project management skills, including ability to efficiently build new products, processes, systems, and initiatives to drive results.
+ Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and comfort working in very high-paced and dynamic environment.
+ Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with well-polished ability to build strong and lasting relationships with leadership, donors and staff.
+ Experience and comfort with developing and delivering presentations for key audiences, including donors and the Board of Directors.
+ Experience managing a small team of staff and/or contract workers.
+ Solid organizational and administrative skills with high attention to detail.
+ Diplomacy and sensitivity to different cultural situations.
+ Commitment to values of integrity, collaboration, humility and candor.
