Director of Development - Development
* GENERAL SUMMARY * Reporting to the Senior Director of Community Partnerships and Engagement, this director-level position is responsible for designing and executing successful fundraising strategies and operations for New London Hospital (NLH) and Newport Health Center (NHC). With support and collaboration from the Dartmouth Health Medical and Healthcare Advancement team, the Director will focus on building relationships with patients, volunteers, trustees, families, and community members associated with NLH/NHC and Dartmouth Health. The role oversees fundraising efforts from individuals, foundations, and corporations while aligning these efforts with NLH's strategic initiatives. The Director will also oversee the Development Program Coordinator, who is responsible for managing a key historical fundraising event, Hospital Days, and ensuring integration with Dartmouth Health’s Development Office for services such as gift processing, acknowledgements, donor database management, and record-keeping. Additionally, this role manages the development department budget, annual fundraising events, and potential capital campaigns to support the organization's mission. * FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Leadership and Strategy * Develop philanthropic strategies in collaboration with senior leadership to align with NLH's strategic initiatives, meeting annual fundraising goals and metrics. * Participate in long-range planning to develop and execute philanthropic plans that articulate fundraising priorities and identify strategic gift opportunities for NLH/NHC. * Oversee the vision, logistics, and execution of the annual benefit fundraiser, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and maximized impact. * Promote and create a culture of philanthropy at NLH/NHC by fostering energy, innovation, and collaboration. Prospect and Donor Management * Focus on the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts from a diverse pool of prospects, including major gifts, annual fund donors, and planned giving prospects. * Build and maintain a prospect pool of approximately 100-150 individuals capable of making gifts of $10,000 or more over a five-year period. * Oversee complex, high-touch donor cultivation and stewardship through in-person and remote events to ensure seamless operations and high-quality engagement. Development Program Coordination * Provide direct supervision to the Development Program Coordinator, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and support for compliance and reporting on grants and gifts. * Manage and support the Development Program Coordinator in executing NLH’s signature event, Hospital Days, and overseeing development services such as gift processing, acknowledgments, and database management. Collaboration and Relationship Building * Develop strong working relationships with NLH/NHC colleagues, Dartmouth Health’s Medical and Healthcare Advancement team, and the communications and marketing departments to ensure integrated workflows. * Collaborate with senior leaders, including the Senior Director of Community Partnerships and Engagement, to set and exceed annual fundraising metrics that align with NLH's philanthropic priorities. * Assist senior leadership, development committees, and trustees in their fundraising efforts by providing strategy, coordination, and the necessary tools to support their success. Proposal Development and Communications * Develop and submit proposals, applications, and other content necessary to support major gift solicitations and stewardship. * Lead the creation of communications and collateral to support fundraising, including donor impact reports, annual reports, and appeals. Community Engagement * Attend and staff relevant events, programs, and community meetings to represent NLH/NHC in the broader community. Additional Duties * Perform other assigned duties, upholding the values of collaboration, compassion, accountability, excellence. * POSITION REQUIREMENTS * Knowledge / Skills / Abilities * Must possess initiative, leadership, creative energy, well-refined organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, ability to take risks, resilience, negotiating skills and proven fundraising expertise. * Intellectual depth, maturity, judgement, and professionalism to earn the trust and confidence of hospital leadership and external stakeholders as well as the ability to build strong collaborative relationships across a complex organization. * The ability to deal with and thrive within a role that requires adaptability and embraces the power of change. * Microsoft Office and database experience required. * Fast-paced and results oriented with the ability to work in a timely manner with multiple deadlines and competing requirements. * Strong written, presentation, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to relate well to individuals from diverse backgrounds. * Demonstration of good judgement, professionalism and the highest standards of ethical conduct. * Travel, local and regional, required. * Experience * * At least five (5) years of experience in Development.
