University of Virginia Health Development within University Advancement at UVA seeks an experienced and accomplished Director of Development for UVA Health Children’s. Reporting to the Executive Director, Healthcare Philanthropy, the Director of Development will maximize fundraising support for clinical care programs, family-centered care and support, and pediatric research through strong partnerships with faculty and healthcare providers, patient families, community members, and private foundations.
UVA Children’s is ranked as the No. 1 children’s hospital in Virginia by U.S. News & World Report for the last 4 years running. UVA Children’s provides primary and specialty care in more than 30 specialties throughout the commonwealth and beyond, with eight pediatric specialties ranked in the top 50 nationally. Located within UVA Medical Center, UVA Health Children’s includes 112 beds, a dedicated pediatric emergency department, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for infants and a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for children younger than 18. The UVA Children’s Ambulatory Clinics at the Battle Building, which opened in 2014, provide integrated outpatient care in Charlottesville. UVA Health Children’s is a member of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) program, a national organization which raises funds and awareness for our hospital across Virginia and in the mid-Atlantic region.
The Director of Development, UVA Health Children’s will:
Serve as the lead fundraiser for UVA Health Children's, managing a portfolio of principal and major gift donors and prospects. Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward these individuals in support of the mission and priorities of program leadership.Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising campaign for UVA Health Children’s in the areas of patient care, research, education and community support missions from multiple prospect populations including patient families, community members, and beyond.Lead the fundraising strategy for the recently launched $25M capital campaign to expand the UVA Health Children’s NICU and PICU, part of a $120M UVA Health buildout of the South Tower, opened in 2020.Manage a team of three UVA Health Children’s colleagues (with potential for expansion to meet organizational needs in the future), including two frontline fundraising roles, one of which oversees the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital program, as well as a development administrative support role.Evaluate HIPAA-compliant patient data for physicians in assigned programs and identify potential major gift prospects for further research and cultivation. Ensure discipline around patient philanthropy processes for self and team.Create and implement a transparent and intentional donor strategy to move prospective donors along the development continuum. Cultivate new and existing donors to higher levels of support for the Department of Pediatrics and UVA Health Children's Hospital programs, research and care of patients.Collaborate with UVA Health Development Office (UVAHD) colleagues to assure alignment and synergy in fundraising efforts. Work in tandem and in a donor-centric manner to advance UVA Health broadly, alongside the Children’s mission. Serve as a key member of the UVAHD Cabinet.Establish a consistent leadership presence within assigned departments and programs, to build faculty and staff partnerships and promote a culture of philanthropy.Provide effective and ongoing training for faculty and staff about philanthropic principles and tactics. Coach faculty and staff so that they are well prepared to positively impact development activities and prospect/donor relationships.Develop and maintain an informed layperson's understanding of the science behind research and care in assigned programs. Act as a translator and synthesizer of ideas when needed to enhance communication between faculty and prospects/donors.Build and strengthen relationships with UVA Health Children’s leadership and key stakeholders, including: Chief, UVA Health Children’s; Chair of the Department of Pediatrics; Pediatric Division Chiefs; UVA Health Children’s administrative leadership; and volunteer leadership.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degreeFive to eight years of experience frontline, major gift fundraising in a healthcare settingDemonstrated success in health fundraising and managing relationships with high-net worth individualsExcellent leadership and management skills, including the ability to successfully navigate and deliver results in a complex environmentExperience using data to evaluate and planSuperb oral and written communication skillsAbility to frequently travel domestically with occasional evening and weekend workValid Driver's LicenseMust have a command of cultural and political sensitivity and value and embrace cultural and social differences.Preferred Qualifications:

Location: The UVA Health Development Office operates within a distributed team’s model for work, offering a flexible and hybrid work space. While this position is based in Charlottesville, VA, qualified candidates will be considered who live within a reasonable driving distance of Charlottesville with the expectation that they would travel to Charlottesville frequently and as needed for meetings, vendor meetings, and events. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. Shared office space is available to staff in Charlottesville, VA. Depending on the type of position and work performed, or as deemed by manager, some positions may be required to work intermittently in a shared office space.
This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This position will not sponsor for work Visas.
The anticipated Hiring Range: $130K - $150K / year and will be commensurate with education and experience.
