Curriculum Director
Job Title: Curriculum Director Location: DC Metro Area Clearance: Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance Position Overview: The Curriculum Director will spearhead the development and leadership of high-quality education programs focused on American diplomacy and the work of the U.S. Department of State. This role requires a visionary approach to reach diverse audiences, create innovative learning opportunities, and build on existing resources to enhance public understanding of diplomacy. The Director will oversee the Diplomacy Simulations Program, connect NMAD’s resources to national curriculums, and cultivate partnerships with cultural and civic organizations. This position also involves collaboration with various stakeholders and representation of NMAD at conferences. Key Responsibilities: + Program Development & Leadership: + Develop and lead educational programs about American diplomacy, aligning with the mission and strategic plan. + Create programs that enrich visitors’ experiences and foster meaningful connections with the content and collections. + Audience Engagement & Innovation: + Envision and implement strategies to reach diverse audiences and create new learning opportunities. + Innovatively build upon existing educational resources and programs related to diplomacy. + Diplomacy Simulations Program: + Oversee and manage the Diplomacy Simulations Program, ensuring its effectiveness and alignment with educational goals. + Curriculum Integration: + Connect exhibits and resources to national curriculums, making them valuable for classroom teaching across the country. + Partnerships & Collaboration: + Strengthen existing partnerships and seek new collaborations with cultural and civic organizations to diversify the museum’s audience and advance the mission. + Initiate and cultivate relationships with State Department offices, bureaus, and other government agencies. + Reporting & Support: + Provide detailed reports and statistics on educational programming as required. + Support grant applications and advancement initiatives with relevant information. + Institutional Planning: + Participate in institutional planning and initiatives to contribute to the museum’s strategic direction. + Docent Training & Curriculum Development: + Develop and deliver curriculum for docent training and candidate classes. + Present talks or secure speakers for training sessions. + Team Collaboration: + Work closely with historians, curators, the collection manager, communication/marketing experts, and Foreign Service Officers to enhance educational programming. + Representation: + Represent at national, state, and local conferences, promoting the museum’s educational initiatives. + Supervision & Support: + Provide direction for the Education Public Programs Specialist. + Support various programming and education initiatives, including teacher/school programs, adult programs, civil society group tours, teen programs, and offsite outreach. Qualifications: + Education: Master’s degree in education, History, Museum Studies, or a related field. + Experience: + Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a museum education department or a similar educational institution. + Proven experience in planning, producing, and writing educational programs for various educational levels. + Skills: + Strong teaching skills with an emphasis on object-based learning and working with museum exhibits and collections. + Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on professional and concise email outreach and in-person meeting facilitation. + Other Attributes: + Demonstrated ability to innovate and engage diverse audiences. + Proven track record of successful collaboration and partnership building.
