Requirements
The Director of External Relations leads the development and implementation of collaborative partnerships between Earth Commons and the vast resources of Washington, DC, including government agencies, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations that support relevant, rigorous, and meaningful learning and action by undergraduate and graduate students on environmental, sustainability and environmental justice issues through focused projects, externships, mentorship and other activities. These partnerships create the basis for inquiry-based experiences and experiential curriculum that allow students to bring their classroom learning alive in real problem-solving situations that address local, national and global challenges and that prepare them for careers as environmental practitioners, researchers, and leaders. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
External Partnerships
Build partnerships with a wide array of governmental agencies, international and intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, and facilitate the participation of external scholars, policymakers, and their organizations in the work of Earth Commons’ educational and research programs and in the larger university.
Identify prospects for, develop, and implement partnerships which will provide mentoring and internship possibilities that will allow Georgetown students to work with distinguished environmental organizations in Washington, DC and around the world.
Manage relationships with external partners and affiliates, serving as a liaison between Georgetown University and these partners in arranging internships, externships, and other collaborative activities.
Coordinate Earth Commons opportunities with the broader landscape of external partnerships developed by related Georgetown programs.
Program Development
Working in collaboration with Earth Commons leaders and affiliated faculty, contribute to the creation of relevant, rigorous, and meaningful environmental curricula that prepare undergraduate and graduate students to be leaders in sustainability, environmental justice, resilience, and protecting the natural environment.
Collaborate with the Red House (Georgetown’s educational incubator) to launch the Laudato Si’ Convergence Lab as part of the Capitol Applied Learning Labs (CALL), providing integrated and experiential curriculum for students who are pursuing externships embedded within affiliated organizations around environment, sustainability, and justice problems.
Develop, implement, and evaluate robust experiential learning opportunities that complement and provide undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities to apply the classroom training they receive in Earth Commons-affiliated programs, including business, public policy, law, and environmental sciences.
In collaboration with relevant undergraduate and graduate program leaders, develop program requirements for student participation in experiential learning placements.
Leverage expertise in science communication, community engagement, and environmental sciences to create and deliver training, seminars and courses for students, postdocs and faculty that empower them to communicate about research and engage with civic society on real-life problems in energy, climate, and sustainability.
Student Engagement
Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive action learning program that will enable students to tackle environmental and sustainability projects on and off campus through internships and externships with leading environmental organizations and government agencies.
Support academic and co-curricular development of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Earth Commons-affiliated programs by facilitating their placement in environmental and sustainability projects on the Georgetown University campus and beyond.
Collaborate with the Cawley Career Education Center, McCourt School of Public Policy, and the Capitol Applied Learning Labs (CALL) to develop and facilitate information sessions, presentations, and career development events that bring environmental practitioners to campus or virtual spaces where they can mentor students and provide general and specific advice and guidance on career opportunities.
Administration and Operations
Collaborate with the Earth Commons Director and other leaders to implement the strategic plan.
Working in close conjunction with the Earth Commons Chief of Staff, create and manage budgets and agreements for relevant programs.
Develop and establish policies and procedures for establishing internship and externship opportunities, recruiting and placing students, and tracking progress and results.
Work Interactions
This position works closely with the Dean of the Earth Commons and senior staff and faculty. Incumbent will develop partnerships and relationships with external organizations as a representative of the Earth Commons and Georgetown University.
Requirements and Qualifications
Master’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, or related field
At least 5 years progressive leadership and management experience in an academic setting or similar organization. Ideally, a candidate will have interest in education and experiential learning
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and consistently within and outside of the institution
Ability to exercise independent judgement and solve problems with strong project management and organizational skills
Collaborative, collegial approach with the ability to deal effectively with high-level administrators, faculty members, students, and external partners

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$80,429.00 - $157,238.93Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
