POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Inpatient Behavioral Health is a key role in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of inpatient behavioral health services. This position involves operational management and the implementation of best practices to promote optimal patient care and outcomes. The Director of Inpatient Behavioral Health (BH) reports directly to the Regional Senior Vice President of Behavioral Health, and works collaboratively with the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, medical directors, attending physicians and ECHN directors/managers, to ensure quality care delivery that is patient-focused, accessible, cost-effective, and compliant with regulatory/accreditation standards of care. The Director of Inpatient Behavioral Health builds effective communication channels to maintain awareness of any customer concerns and responds in a timely manner. Participates in the development and implementation of the vision and strategy for in-patient behavioral health services that is consistent with both departmental and ECHN organizational goals. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Nursing. A current Registered Nurse license in the State of Connecticut is required, professional certification highly desirable. Master’s Degree in related field required, preferably in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of five (5) years experience in managerial capacity in the behavioral health field required. Requires experience working with, and understanding hospital based, behavioral health Care. Experience with system integration among and between various departments within a hospital.

COMPETENCIES:

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with and be responsive to patients, family, and the multitude of other customers who interface with areas of responsibility. Strong analytical ability is required in order to effectively review, understand, implement and correctly manage business plans. Must have demonstrated effective leadership experiences with multi-disciplinary team of professionals and support staff in both daily operational issues as well as long-term planning. Must be flexible and have a strong teamwork orientation. Knowledge and skill sets to perform the job must be continually updated in order to remain proficient and proactive. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Demonstrates knowledge of current leadership, management and performance improvement concepts and participates in the development and implementation of organizational strategies to address opportunities for the delivery of nursing care. Creates an environment which promotes the provision of high-quality, evidence based clinical practice. Implements and evaluates an effective, ongoing Performance Improvement (PI) and Service Excellence  program to measure, assess and improve quality nursing care. Revises systems and processes to adapt to the changing needs of the community. Demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and application of Joint Commission, State and Federal Standards. Participates in the preparation of the service line for review/survey by regulatory agencies (Joint Commission, DPH, CMS). Assists in planning and implemention of improvement for documentation, treatment, and patient satisfaction deficiencies.  Participates and involves the nursing staff in evidenced-based practice and evaluative research activites. Works collaboratively with the Quality Department, BH Leadership and program staff on identifying, developing and monitoring appropriate clinical quality measures. Promotes patient movement through an effective discharge and admission process. As needed, assists in nurse manager coverage of the inpatient behavioral health units. Pursues personal and professional growth and development.  Serves as a professional role model and mentor to motivate, develop, recruit and retain future nurse leaders. Serves as a change agent, assisting all staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact and process of change. Participates with and mentors nurse managers to promote patient satisfaction through the delivery of high-quality patient care, regular patient rounds and implementation of service recovery techniques.  Promotes staff and nurse manager satisfaction through a participative practice environment, encouraging staff decision making and autonomy.  Feedback from staff is encouraged, valued and incorporated, as appropriate. Mentors nurse managers in the preparation and execution of the budget. Promotes physician satisfaction by maintaining good rapport and collaborative working relations with the Medical Staff.
