Director of Laboratory/Histology
Job Description

Schedule: Full time, exempt, benefit eligible

Job Summary

Under the immediate supervision of the ACEO. The Director of Laboratory/Histology maintains (24 hour accountability) the delivery of quality by ensuring that reporting Team Members function within the policies and procedures and regulatory agencies impacting the hospital. This role will also direct and/or performing a variety of analytical determinations of body fluid and tissue specimens utilizing established and approved protocols, incorporating independent judgement and responsibilities with minimal technical supervision.  Includes decisions concerning laboratory practices, policies and procedures, planning, staffing, and problem solving as well as any other assigned.   Works directly with the Team Leader in all disciplining and evaluating of the Lab personnel.  Will provide input regarding budgets for the areas of responsibility.

Scope of Responsibility:

Provides leadership and direction to the Laboratory Department

Provides leadership and direction to the Phlebotomy Team

Provides leadership and direction to the Histology Department

Minimal Acceptable Job Qualifications

Licensure/Certification:        

 Certification as a MT (ASCP), CLS(NCA), or equivalent credentials. FEMA NIMS modules ICS-100 and ICS-200 within 30 day of hire SAMA Level 1 within 30 days of hire  BCLS within 60 days of hire

Experience:      One to three years of previous laboratory supervision required.

Education:       Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, medical technology, or related field from an accredited college or university which preferably included one year of laboratory clinical training.

Other:               Demonstrates a basic understanding of the role of the laboratory in providing excellent patient care and the responsibility of the laboratory in providing accurate and timely information to assist in positive patient outcomes in addition to the importance of the laboratory specialist's working relationship with other Specialists.

Demonstrates well developed interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with all internal and external customers.

Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory testing, reporting, specimen processing, collection and the operation of related equipment in order to perform a variety of analytical procedures on specimens and to provide clinical guidance to staff.

Demonstrates strong analytical and organizational skills with a strong commitment to customer service.

Demonstrates a general working knowledge of the normal growth,  development, related behaviors, needs, comfort and range of treatment appropriate to the age (including neonates, child, adolescent, aging adult) and diagnosis of patient served to support the provision of an individualized multidisciplinary plan of care.
