The Director of Memory Support position manages the memory support neighborhood team to effectively engage residents during programming and care interactions, and during times of resident behavioral expressions. The DMS communicates with families, collaborates with the Assisted Living Director of Resident Engagement (when applicable). The DMS is responsible for coordinating volunteers and seeking cooperative partnerships with area businesses, organizations, or individuals to deliver 8 Dimensions of Engagement programs.
Essential Functions
1. Responsible for managing & maintaining the information and profile documentation per the company guidelines.
2. Responsible for ensuring that the Memory Support standardized programs are implemented and on-going. Includes:
DayPulse, Dimensions of Engagement, monthly family support groups, yearly Elegance Resident Engagement
initiatives, as well as any other program implementation.
3. Leads programs as scheduled; or oversees the Memory Support Assistant and/or care staff to ensure resident
engagement while making sure that daily programming is a mix of both large and small groups, individual and parallel
programs.
4. Coordinates with Director of Health and Wellness to attend family care conferences as required by state regulations.
Whenever possible, will assist with the evaluation of potential new residents and provide Memory Support program
overview and pertinent resident engagement updates.
5. Works with Resident Engagement staff to ensure all Memory support residents have resident-specific programming and
social interaction appropriate to their current cognitive abilities. Uses DayPulse and Dimensions of Engagement
resources to provide support and training to Memory Support staff to ensure programs are varied and diverse to meet
the needs of residents in Memory Support. Ensures all staff has training sufficient to self-direct programs for residents
of the Memory Support neighborhood.
6. Responsible for managing, coaching, assisting, and mentoring all care staff working within Memory Support; to
maintain positive resident outcomes and minimize behavioral expressions and assures that all staff maintain appropriate
training as required by state.
7. Meets monthly with the Director of Culinary services to coordinate weekly Cocktails and Connections Happy Hour
event, current company-mandated events, and any special holiday, or community-specific events for the following
month. Works with the Director of Culinary Services to ensure meals/meal services are compliant with the Elegance
Memory Support Dining policy.
8. Review the 24-hour log daily, to stay current on resident issues and conduct regular room sweeps to ensure no hazardous
items or safety concerns are present to align with all local, state, and federal rules and regulations as they apply to
services delivered in Memory Support, as well as meets Elegance guidelines related to this issue.
9. Communicate effectively with resident family members while answering questions, addressing concerns, or sharing
updates about their loved one. Elevates family concerns of a critical nature, or situations that are unresolvable to
Executive Director. Invites family members to participate in neighborhood programs and events and encourages family
members to share their gifts and talents with the residents on a voluntary basis. Works collaboratively with applicable
functional leaders to resolve family members concerns that relate to specific areas of service. Organizes, coordinates
educational providers, and facilitates a monthly Memory-specific support group.
10. Acts as a vocal advocate for the Memory Support neighborhood and ensures Executive Director and functional leaders
are aware of points of celebration, opportunities, and need regarding the neighborhood and its residents. Tours the
neighborhood with E.D., DHW, DCS, DOM, and DRE minimally once weekly.
11. Represents the Memory Support neighborhood as the subject matter expert by making self-available to DSM for
speaking engagements and/or marketing efforts to promote the neighborhood to the outside community.
12. Maintains the neighborhood and any model rooms in a "tour-ready" state and/or collaborates with Maintenance and
Housekeeping to achieve this, if necessary.
13. Maintains a Person-Centered environment by promoting updated care language usage as outlined in the Memory
Support Program Guide and advocating for individualized approaches and service planning on behalf of the residents.
14. Advocates for and recommends holistic approaches for behavioral expressions whenever possible.
15. Promotes and maintains a home-like living environment but working to minimize any clinical aspects on the neighborhood, per the Memory Support Program Guide.
16. Works in a safe manner, ensures any employees reporting to them work in a safe manner and corrects unsafe action.
Compliant with Safety Committee Standard. Should workplace injuries occur, when required, the Department Heads and
Directors assist the Executive Director with the investigation, return to work, and management of the injured worker
communication with care provider and Community.
17. Fosters teamwork with co-workers, shows initiative in overcoming obstacles, takes actions which assist others beyond
job responsibilities, and has a positive impact on co-workers, residents, and visitors.
18. Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Education and Experience
A genuine desire to advocate for those with a Dementia diagnosis. 2+ years of Management experience with employee oversight and customer relations preferred. 3+ years of experience in a Dementia care setting preferred. Complimentary professional experience in recreation or occupational therapy, art or music therapy, hospitality management, teaching, coaching, health & wellness, or related fields are welcome. Associate or bachelor’s degree in health sciences, Social Services, Geriatrics, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, or Recreational Therapy is preferred or combination of education and experience. On-going certifications and/or continuing education credits in geriatrics, Dementia, leadership, activities, strongly preferred. Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Teams is essential. Excel preferred.
Certifications, Licenses, and other Special Requirements
Must meet all health requirements, including TB. Must pass criminal background check and Drug test to include Marijuana, first aid& CPR certified Must be at least 21 years of age. Must have compassion for and desire to work with the elderly.
