Job Description
The Office of Safety Education and Outreach (SEO) seeks a Director of Outreach & Special Events to manage citywide (throughout the five boroughs) and the day-to-day operations of special event programs at the Office of Safety Education and Outreach (SEO), including Street Team outreach, helmet fitting events, in-school projects, health fairs, and other overtime evening and weekend events. Responsibilities will include: supervising a team of Outreach Specialists who will conduct Street Team outreach, Older Adults/Parent Workshops, education and tabling events to engage with drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and e-micromobility users and with local residents and businesses and community based organizations in communities near high-risk locations for traffic crashes; ensuring proper staffing and materials are provided at all SEO events for the public; providing new and updated presentations and necessary training for outreach staff; conducting high level weekly meetings with NYPD on Street Teams initiatives; working with RRM to place and track DOT VMS boards and scouting locations for VMS board placement; overseeing the Safety Education helmet fitting program conducted with Councilmembers from April through October; creating promotional materials about the helmet events; providing trainings for staff in other DOT units participating in the helmet fitting program; overseeing and training a group of Captains from SEO and providing on-site support when appropriate; examining locations for helmet fittings and creating site plans for each event; and attending helmet fittings and other events to supervise activities and address issues that arise when appropriate. Other responsibilities include: overseeing delivery cyclist forums including managing outreach within communities to ensure attendance; planning and conducting hands-on traffic safety training activities in schools, using traffic crash/mapping data to select locations; acting as a liaison to other City agencies, vendors, schools, and community organizations who provide multiservice programming; responding to requests for participation in health fairs and community events; overseeing the coordination of DWI outreach/tabling events in stadiums and other venues; supervising the outreach team at evening and weekend DWI events to help educate the general public; maintaining and using online systems to track and provide monthly reports on helmet usage and materials distribution; tracking schools served by other events and theatre/arts programs, and other project goals; providing weekly and monthly calendar reports; creating special programming to be scheduled from November to April when outdoor events are not being held and providing oversight for Outreach team to meet benchmarks; and attending Community Board, Community Education Council, PTA, Principals, Teachers and Parent Coordinator, and other meetings as a representative of DOT as needed to provide presentations on available Safety Education programs and services.
Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
