+ Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of experience in print and book production management including multi-color pre-press preparation, color correction, digital file management, and printing technologies.
+ Must have experience with PC and Macs including design and layout software QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, PhotoShop, Acrobat, Microsoft suite, and Filemaker Pro.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
+ Experience in humanities book publishing and production, preferably in art and archaeology.
+ Working knowledge of HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS and web-based content management systems such as Plone or Drupal.
+ Working knowledge of Final Cut Pro or other video editing software.
+ Ability to communicate effectively and collegially with wide variety of individuals such as authors, editors, vendors, and contractors.
+ Knowledge of art history and archaeology desired.
+ Knowledge of various web technologies and workflows, most especially open access publishing.

+ Solicit quotations from print and web vendors, evaluate bids and vendor samples, and choose and monitor the vendors for appropriate quality standards for book and web production.
+ Coordinate work with directors of studies and managing editors in-house as well as selection of external contractors, particularly web and print designers, editors, proofreaders, indexers, and web developers.
+ Act as photo editor for production and visual quality of images submitted by authors for print media and staff for web publishing, and help in the choice and improvement of images where necessary.
+ Plan and supervise departmental budget, including multiple project budgets.
+ Negotiate contracts and coordinating distribution and marketing efforts for print books with our distributor, Harvard University Press.
+ Keep up to date on new publishing and web-based technologies and venues, including technologies for print and digital books.
+ Create and maintain an archive of all print, digital, and web production materials.
+ Attend or arrange for Publications staff to attend conferences and scholarly meetings to promote Dumbarton Oaks publications, budget permitting.
+ Manage the editorial and production process for the institutional annual report.
+ Other projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Director of Publications supervises four publications staff members, as well as occasional interns, delegating responsibilities and organizing workflows to ensure schedules and budgets are met.
