Director of Security

The University of Virginia seeks applicants for two newly created Director of Security positions, who want to serve the community and help keep the University and surrounding area safe. The directors of security will be responsible for overseeing the organization and management of Hospital or Grounds security personnel. They are responsible for meeting the overall goals of the security segment of the Police Department, resolving problems and working with other University departments and community agencies.

As a Director of Security at one of the nation’s top public universities, you will be serving in a vibrant community with a variety of culture, recreation and entertainment opportunities – suitable for families and young professionals.

UPD takes pride in being a leader in community-based, progressive approaches toward safety. The department supports its employees and encourages them to introduce creative and innovative ways to promote public safety, engage the community and be a leader on grounds.

These are un-armed, uniformed non-sworn employees who play an integral role in the overall safety and security at the University.

Responsibilities include:

Communicates with upper management and administration as issues occur.

 Resolves internal departmental issues as they occur.

Ensures that the requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met.

Acts as a liaison to other departments and organizations and the University Community.

Provides follow-up and documentation on incident reports and other situations involving keys, door repair, card reader doors, and special open door requests.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Provides strategic planning for the security division within the police department.

Directly supervises the Director of Security for the Medical Center and the Director of Security for Grounds positions.

Sits on the Universities Threat Assessment Team.

Qualifications:

High school diploma and at least five (5)  years of experience in a security related position.

Applicants must pass the DCJS Campus Security Officer certification and pass Security CIT training. (Training will be  provided by the department)

A Valid Virginia Driver's license with a positive points balance is required, if applicants have an out of state driver's license they must be able to obtain a VA license within 90 days of employment.

Previous supervisory experience and the ability to lead by example and mentor team members.

The ability to appropriately apply safety principles, evaluate situations, and routinely make decisions under varying and often rapidly evolving situations.

Applicants must possess strong oral and written communication skills.

Applicants must be able to apply progressive discipline concepts and interface with HR representatives for personnel issues 

Applicants must be able to work a flexible schedule including mandatory overtime as a result of unforeseen circumstances and coverage requirements.

Anticipated hiring range: $90,000 - $105,000 / annual
 

Candidates will be required to complete a background check, psychological assessment, and drug screen before a formal offer of employment will be made per University policy.
