General Notes:

Dean of Students staff serve students through programs, events, resources, and services built around student support, student involvement, and student conduct. Our services also include Student Governance Organizations. Dean of Students is one of eight departments in the Division of Student Affairs.

Purpose:

This role oversees the comprehensive operations of the Student Outreach and Support (SOS) unit, supporting student success and well-being through crisis intervention, case management, and proactive outreach initiatives. The Director will work collaboratively across campus to support students in navigating challenging circumstances, fostering a supportive and safe campus environment, and responding effectively to emergencies and behavioral concerns.

Responsibilities:

Program Leadership

Establish effective strategy to implement all aspects of the SOS program, including crisis and care support functions, case management, campus-wide training, and outreach.

Provide leadership and supervision to the case management team ensuring the delivery of high-quality support services and effective referrals. 

Administer the student emergency fund, manage the program budget, and lead strategic planning and assessment initiatives.

Develop and implement services, policies, and protocols to support student well-being.

Case Management and Crisis Response

Assist the Dean of Students with threat assessment efforts.

Co-chair the Behavior Assessment Team with the Executive Director for Student Support.

Serve as the primary contact for elevated concerns from the 24-hour Behavioral Concerns Advice Line.

Act as an emergency contact for the University Police Department, Counseling and Mental Health Center, University Housing and Dining, and other campus partners during non-business hours, weekends, and holidays.

Schedule appointments with students referred to the Behavior Assessment Team and/or for case management.

Conduct intake appointments to assess needs holistically.

Coordinate action plan, referrals, and support, including follow-up appointments as necessary.

Connect students with the appropriate resources on- and off-campus.

Communicate and collaborate with appropriate staff, resources, and the Behavior Assessment Team.

Document case notes in electronic record-keeping system

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in student affairs administration, counseling, law, or a related field. A minimum of eight years of experience developing or administering student programs in a university setting. Experience working in a Student Affairs environment, with a focus on emergency response and assessment of students in crisis. Demonstrated experience supervising full-time professional staff. 

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to engage diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. Proven ability to manage complex situations and respond effectively to emergencies. Expertise in creating and delivering engaging outreach presentations. Ability to identify, support, and refer mental health concerns to appropriate clinical resources. Proficiency in risk assessment related to harm to self or others. Comprehensive knowledge of education laws and policies, including, but not limited to, the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), due process, Title IX, and The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Proficiency in mediation, strategic planning, and program evaluation. Excellent communication and decision-making skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

More than eight years of experience counseling or working with college students. Leadership experience in crisis management, threat and risk assessment, and crisis or grief intervention protocol development and implementation. Proven experience supporting victims of crime and working with law enforcement agencies. Assessment experience, including evaluation of crisis response, counseling, or other support programs. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment when addressing student issues, parental/guardian concerns, and faculty/staff inquiries.

Salary:

$95,000+ depending on qualifications
