PURPOSE
According to the prescribed policies and procedures of the organization including all applicable federal, state and local regulations and under the general supervision of Vice President of Accounting, the Director of tax assumes oversight and leadership for the preparation, review and timely filing of 1000+ tax returns, statements and other reports at required intervals. He or she must be well versed in not profit and partnership taxes and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). He or she is involved in proposing, implementing and maintaining policies to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations and to minimize the company’s tax obligations. The Director of Tax will interact with managers, VP’s and senior-level executives which requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oversees the relationship with 3rd party tax preparation firms currently aligned with the business.Reviews high priority tax returns and year-end tax accruals; estimating income taxes. Working with syndicator and accounting firms to ensure changes required by syndicators are completed prior to filing.Develops, implements and maintains systems, procedures and policies, to ensure adherence to company guidelines. Develops more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.Presents to the Audit, Finance and Risk Committee as needed on tax strategies or key events.Assists in strategic planning exercises to ensure go-forward structures are optimized to minimize and/or stay compliant with local, state and federal tax laws.Onboards new and managed housing sites. Determines initial filing of tax returns based on creation date of an entity or when activity starts on the entity. Ensure final tax returns are filed in conjunction with dissolution of entities. Conducts research and planning according to current tax laws, and advising senior management on the tax impact of current and proposed company activities and transactionsIdentifies ways to minimize the organization’s tax liability each year in accordance with current tax laws. Tax planning for the exit of the limited partner at the end of the compliance period.Facilitates communication with appropriate government agencies and in-house counsel related to tax mattersOversees reporting and payment of all local, state and federal taxesResponds to federal, state and local tax notices and collaborates with legal as neededEXPECTATIONS

Experience: Seven or more years performing the job responsibilities in the affordable housing industry. Knowledge in non-profit, corporate and partnership taxes as well as Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) as must. Knowledge in 163(j) election, form 8832 and 168(h) elections preferred
Prior supervisory experience preferred
Skills: Must have working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office Suite.
Licensure: CPA preferred.
