Director of Underwriting

Job Summary

As the Director of Underwriting, you will be a key member of our leadership team, responsible for directing the overall underwriting strategy, operations, and policy development across product lines.  You will be responsible to establish financial control guidelines, implement underwriting tools, and develop administrative standards and best practices to support the profitable growth of the Company.

Responsibilities:

Risk Management:

Leverages deep market insights (e.g., extrapolating granular trends, competitor positioning and anticipated behavior) to opine on underwriting policies, pricing, and strategy.

Research competitors and market condition to develop and maintain risk selection criteria and methods that support sound risk management.

Coordinate underwriting audit schedule to ensure continued acceptable performance.

Monitor market trends, regulatory changes and emerging risks to proactively adapt our risk strategy.

Prepare periodic risk reports for senior management and the board of directors.

Conduct scenario-based risk assessments to evaluate potential impacts on the company and perform stress tests to assess resilience under adverse conditions.

Marketing and Distribution Management:

Identify areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification.

Expand and maintain positive relationships with brokers to secure opportunities compatible with marketing and strategic plan objectives.

Leadership Capabilities:

Lead the selection, development, and performance management of underwriting staff; fosters expertise through talent attraction, training, development, coaching and mentoring.

Identify UW tools, product and services enhancements to drive profitable growth.

Develop and maintain standard processes and procedures to ensure efficient operations while maintaining compliance with corporate risk tolerances and regulatory frameworks.

Be a positive agent of change by actively supporting Company initiatives such as business strategy, new technology and process enhancement.

Qualifications

Influential leader with a strategic mindset and demonstrated relationship-building ability that provides direction for the underwriting operations.   Has successfully demonstrated the ability to establish long-term goals, achieve them, and deliver results.

At least 7 years of experience in underwriting property and casualty, managing a team of underwriters.

Advanced knowledge of commercial property & casualty products including insurance operations; actuarial concepts; regulatory environment; loss control/risk engineering; competitive conditions; and industry trends.

Other professional skills required include superior communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, listening); approachability; coaching/development; analyzing and problem solving; relationship and service driven; clear solutions orientation and commitment to achieving financial objectives; negotiation skills; and demonstrated ability to consistently and positively influence others both internally and externally (brokers/customers).
