Purpose
The Director Open Pit Mine Engineering has a global scope that covers diverse and sometimes conflicting priorities. This position works in a quasi matrix structure directly reporting to the Senior Director Mine Engineering, but with loose lines to operating site Senior Management, or to Project Directors for Pipeline projects and M&A Targets. The Director Open Pit Mine Engineering will draw on extensive and broad industry experience to apply diversified engineering techniques to complex situations and as needed, rely on first principals, fundamental engineering theory and broad industry knowledge to ensure practical solutions. The Director Open Pit Mine Engineering is a functional lead for Open Pit Mine Engineering and is globally responsible for Open Pit Mine Engineering career path planning and a key contributor to Open Pit Mine Engineering standards and guidelines. Additionally, the Director is responsible to ensure supply of Open Pit mine engineering support and peer review for pipeline projects, M&A initiatives, Exploration Targets, and corporate reserves.
Essential Duties
Provide visible and felt leadership in support of health safety & security programs and initiatives. Provide assistance and cooperation in other audits, investigations (potentially including investigations of serious accidents); and by involvement in other initiatives, Supply or coordinates mine engineering and mine operations support to existing mine sites on an impromptu pull fashion, either personally or by arranging appropriate support from others, as a specialist resource; in support of substantial programs or initiatives; or in a troubleshooting situation, Work with operating sites to determine and set Open Pit mine engineering standard process by building consensus, through collaboration and benchmarking of best practices, for appropriate standard technical processes across all sites globally, Contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of strategic process guidelines and best practice; provide technical input grounded in practical knowledge and practices across Newmont’s operations and by effectively communicating with applicable site representatives. Lead periodic evaluations of mine optimization approaches within the organization and offer sound recommendations, Work with the Geological, Metallurgical, Geostatistical and S&ER Functional Leads for alignment of process, Provide Open Pit mining engineering skills to Project Evaluation and M&A Due Diligence Teams, analysing information, develop plans and schedules, investigating discrepancies and make recommendations to assist in decisions regarding potential mergers and acquisitions for Newmont, The Director will provide mine engineering leadership and support to Stage Gate Pipeline projects, Exploration target analysis, site support, and M&A initiatives as requested, Perform Independent and Peer Review of stage gate work from Order of Magnitude through to Definitive Feasibility, using a seasoned and varied background of experience to thoroughly and objectively assess each project, Support of corporate initiatives will be supplied as needed. Currently support will be supplied to Business Planning, Value Assurance, AFE reviews, Full Potential evaluations, and Business Improvement exercises, Work closely with new operations as they transition from Definitive Feasibility into execution to implement appropriate standard technical processes and operating standards, as part of Business Readiness, Additional responsibilities include mine engineering work as needed with an emphasis on unit costing, mine planning, benchmarking and optimization, The Director will ensure adequate connections exist with Open Pit Mine Engineering consultants to ensure a backup supply of skilled Mine Engineers for peak loads, Act as a mentor in developing operating site and mine engineering personnel.

The Director Open Pit Mine Engineering works within Newmont Policies, Standards and industry best practices. Additional framework may include industry codes from SEC, SME, JORC, and NI 43-101.
Training & Experience
A minimum of 20 years combined mine engineering and operations experience, most at Open Pit operations, including substantial experience in hard rock gold mines, A B.Sc. Mining Engineering or equivalent is essential, an advanced degree is preferred, Experience in supervision of Mine Engineering professional staff and related groups at owner operator mine sites, Experience in senior mine management roles, such as Mine Manager, Overseas work experience preferred, operations start-up experience in remote location desirable, History of practical mine design, planning or other engineering experience. Experience in operations with complex multi mine, multi process situations preferable, Seasoned knowledge of; mine methods, mine design, production scheduling, equipment selection, reserve estimation, maintenance development and expert systems. Site experience with oxide Au leading and Cu/Au ore bodies, Good level of knowledge of ground control plans, with good understanding of geotechnical methods, A working knowledge of hydrology, Detailed knowledge of unit costing methods for budgeting, forecasting, and reserve analysis, knowledge of Xeras a plus, Seasoned experience in project evaluation at all stages from Target ID to Definitive Feasibility, with an emphasis on value and quality analysis, Experience in performing M&A due diligence, Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills, Extensive experience with permit applications for EIS or equivalent, Knowledge of exploration methods, resource estimation, High level of competence in the use of mine planning software, including optimal techniques and cash flow analysis, Ability to build and maintain strong communications network with peers, Project Managers, Mine Managers, Chief Engineers, and JV partner representatives, Familiarity with business systems and standard office application software, Strong technical writing, group presentation skills, and interpersonal skills including a high degree of cultural sensitivity, Well networked into industry specialists and consultants, Recognized as Qualified Person under codes 43-101, JORC and/or SME, Bilingual skills, or English as a second language a plus.
Working Conditions
The Director Open Pit Mine Engineering is based at the Palazzo Verde office in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Performance of the work requires travel (30-50% of work time) to domestic and international operations. Travel can be at a moments notice to overseas or domestic locations, including Newmont and Non-Newmont locations and Greenfield areas.
Will be required to access mining and processing areas, rough terrain, or exploration sites. Frequent working at a computer/monitor or keyboard.
