Director-Quality & Safety

Job Summary: The Director-Quality and Safety oversees the quality and safety initiatives and programs for assigned adult hospitals in Loma Linda University Health System, a large tertiary academic medical center comprised of multiple hospitals. Provides leadership in the development of a culture of safety and the measurement of the quality of care identifying opportunities and strategies for performance improvement. Champions organization-wide development of creative approaches to nursing practice and nursing quality outcomes that are evidenced-based and cost-effective. Participates in nursing-wide strategic planning process and aligns evidenced-based practice (EBP) and Nursing Quality Initiatives with goals and objectives with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Exhibits leadership skills where team members are not direct reports. Compels colleagues through influence and superior communication (written and verbal) to make an impact in a fast-paced organization with multiple changing demands and competing initiatives. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Master of Science Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing with a Master of Science Degree in health-related field required. Minimum three years prior work experience in healthcare quality, regulatory compliance, or nursing management with most recent experience in an acute care hospital setting required.

Knowledge and Skills: Substantial knowledge of state and federal healthcare regulations and accreditation, quality, patient safety, performance improvement methodologies, data management and statistical analysis, medical staff structure, legal aspects of care, nursing scope of practice, and evidenced-based clinical practice standards required. Demonstrates professional competency and ability to develop and champion clinical outcome improvements in a multi-initiative organization with competing priorities.  Demonstrates a high degree of social skills in obtaining cooperation and support; ability to work effectively with a wide variety of staff. Able to read; write and speak with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), electronic event reporting program, spreadsheets, and graphics; operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the position. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; provide leadership; be assertive and consistent in enforcing policies ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, rules and laws; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to  communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments; compose written material; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.

Licensures and Certifications: Active California Registered Nurse license required. Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) preferred upon hire, however, may be obtained within two years of hire.
