Job Summary
The OB Director plans, organizes, and directs the overall operation of the OB Unit. Directs and supervises nursing staff in the provision of nursing care to women of childbearing age and their newborn. Assures the availability of human and fiscal resources which facilitate care. Provides nursing care as expected of an OB RN to women of childbearing age, their fetus and/or neonate in an inpatient setting during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Plans, organizes and direct OB Unit operations and ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
• Determines appropriate staffing levels to meet patient, family, and unit needs.
• Evaluates clinical practice on the OB unit for cost effectiveness and compliance with practice and employment regulations.
• Responsible for patient care according to the standards of care for obstetrics and newborns.
• Assures nursing care to women of childbearing age, their fetus and/or neonate in an inpatient setting during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
• Possesses skills and knowledge essential to the application and interpretation of the electronic fetal monitoring.
• Establishes guidelines for the mother and her significant other(s) education regarding antepartum and postpartum care of the mother and care of the newborn.
• Responsible for overseeing appropriate charges for materials utilized and procedures done during the hospital stay.
• Responds appropriately according to department standards to emergent situations (i.e. hemorrhage, fetal distress, the depressed neonate or precipitous delivery).
• Make daily rounds in assigned areas to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere.
• Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment.
• Initiate, interpret and enforce proper services and procedures within assigned areas and maintain and interpret hospital policies and procedures.
• Provides managerial leadership to assure an optimal functioning nursing unit and has 24-hour responsibility for the unit. Serves as role model and leader both professionally and clinically at all times.
• Supports hospital decisions, mission and values at all times.
• Serves as resource to staff, interpreting philosophy, goals, standards, policies and procedures.
• Collaborates with other nursing leaders in planning, policy formation and decision making for the Patient Services Division.
• Promotes a high level of quality patient care to meet patient needs and realistic expectations.
• Develops, implements, continuously monitors and provides changes for improvement to unit-based Performance Improvement Programs that coordinate with the overall nursing and hospital PI program.
• Develops annual operating, capital and FTE budgets for management of expense to revenue ratios within established guidelines. Maintains resources within budget.

• Provides training, education and professional development opportunities for nursing staff to ensure clinical competence and to promote job satisfaction.
• Write departmental policy and procedure manuals and updates as required.

• Practices and behaves in a professional, safe and ethical manner at all times.
• Maintains friendly and courteous interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.
• Participates in performance improvement and educational activities. Completes all CEU’s as required by respective licensure. If licensed, maintains an active and current license.

• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.
• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.
• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
• Graduate of an approved school for professional nursing. RN license required.
• Minimum of five years’ experience as a staff nurse in an acute OB care setting.
• NRP trained within six months of employment.
• BSN within three years of hire.
• Management experience preferred.
Position Requirements, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current RN license in the State of Iowa.
• Current BCLS certification.
• ACLS within six months of employment.
• Strong leadership skills.
• Experience with successfully managing budgets.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated performance excellence and leadership qualities.
• Excellent organization, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently, make decisions, meet deadlines, and solve problems; working under a moderate to high degree of pressure.
• Experience with hospital-based computer system.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, patients, families and the general public.
