Distillate Strategist

The Distillate Strategist  provides market fundamentals, short/medium term supply/demand analysis, and trader support for the Distillate supply and trading function globally. In addition, this position will support ad hoc requests from Commercial Senior Management, Commercial groups, Chief Economist, Investor Relations, and Downstream. This position will be based in our Houston, TX office.
 
Responsibilities May Include:

Understanding key trading positions of Distillate trading, globally, at all times and coordinates analytical team’s work to suggest analysis that should be conducted to ensure that all aspects of a position are understood.   Development and maintenance of supply and demand models.  This will involve working closely with trading to understand the market and trends, incorporate downtime, seasonal cycles, macroeconomic variables and utilize import/export data to ensure the models are accurate and accepted by trading. Identify market anomalies and communicate to trading on what physical market and forward market changes might occur.   Providing market analytical support for Commercial by using supply and demand modeling and macro-economic data to develop a medium term (within ~24 months) view of the market.  Drawing on fundamental and technical data as appropriate to develop forward global market view predictive models.  Working with 3rd party consultants and brokers to understand and evaluate their views on oil movements and factor those into development of P66 market view.  Communicating external study results and market views to assist traders with successful implementation of trading tactics.  Understanding and communicating geopolitical and regulatory events/factors which impact price movements.  Leading information gathering process and development of presentation packages as needed.  Sharing knowledge freely and improve peer group understanding of own niche markets. Serve as a mentor to junior market analysts. Drive improvement of existing forecast models.  Leading ad-hoc projects and analysis around market fundamentals (including infrastructure changes) to support trade ideas.


Required Qualifications:

Legally authorized to work in the job posting country Bachelor’s degree  4 or more years commercial/trading or related experience in the energy industry  Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written to ensure clarity and common understanding Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills Strong ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Capable of gaining consensus and trust across multiple functional areas within and external to Commercial to build a common vision and direction  Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, or economics Ability to code in Visual Basic, Python and/or R Ability to adapt to quickly evolving requirements Ability to synthesize data into useful information, and articulate it in an easy-to-understand format Proactive in problem identification and resolution, can provide creative solutions to complex issues High degree of ethics, personal drive and dedication to achieve team goals and general interest objectives Proficient in SQL, Tableau, and Power BI Experience in Machine Learning Knowledge of Commercial trading businesses  An understanding of broader commodity markets (Crude, Gasoline, Distillates, NGLs) Knowledge of global commodity trading  Refining/petrochemical knowledge  High degree of collaborative skills. Ability to develop, lead and actively participate on cross functional teams Strong willingness and ability to support internal customers in business requirements High degree of initiative and works proactively to anticipate needs Excellent written, oral communication, inter-personal and presentation skills  High degree of collaborative skills; ability to develop, lead and actively participate on teams  Ability to manage conflict, influence others and persuade/facilitate resolution  Proficiency with statistical modeling software, Access or other database software, and economic model development
