Summary:
The Doctor's Assistant in the Surgery Department is a specialized Veterinary Assistant (VA) who plays a crucial role in the surgery department. This position assists a dedicated surgeon in preparing cases, scrubbing in on surgeries, and handling paperwork. The Doctor's Assistant helps ensure a smooth workflow in the surgery department by managing pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative tasks. The role focuses on providing support to the surgeons and improving the overall efficiency of the surgical team.
Responsibilities:
Assist with preparing patients for surgery, including setting up surgical cases, collecting medical histories, and organizing necessary documentation.Help set up and maintain sterile surgical environments, including the preparation of instruments and supplies.Scrub in and assist during surgical procedures by handling instruments, maintaining sterility, and assisting the surgeon as needed.Manage post-surgical paperwork, ensuring all patient records are accurately updated and that discharge instructions are communicated effectively to pet owners.Coordinate with the surgical team to ensure all cases are prepped and ready for surgery on schedule.Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the surgery suites, ensuring all equipment is properly cleaned and sterilized. Assist with inventory management, tracking surgical supplies and ensuring timely restocking.Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients regarding pre- and post-operative care.Assist in other administrative tasks as required by the surgery team, such as managing scheduling and organizing case paperwork.Assist with appointment days which include getting an accurate history, presenting to the doctor and being able to gather information from medical records and document in a timely manner.Be able to send out histopathology samples, cultures and lab work to the correct lab and track when final reports are completed. Other duties as assigned or required from the surgeons and surgical team.
Knowledge and Skills:
Strong understanding of basic veterinary surgical procedures and sterile techniques.Ability to assist during surgeries while maintaining a sterile environment.Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced surgical environment.Clear and compassionate communication skills for client education and team collaboration.Strong attention to detail, particularly in handling medical records and ensuring documentation accuracy.Able to think critically and problem solve in a fast-paced environment. Medical clerk certificate or obtain one within 3 months of hire
Computer Skills:
Familiarity with veterinary software for patient management and record-keeping.Proficient or familiar with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint).Ability to learn and proficiently use surgery-related software and tools
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and move animals up to 40lbs, and perform physically demanding tasks.Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment where critical care may be required.Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, and climb stairs during shifts.Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods.Comfortable working in environments with moderate noise, including animal sounds.Exposure to anesthetic gases, X-ray irradiation, and other hospital supplies within OSHA standards.Flexibility in scheduling, including availability for on-call shifts. This position is 3 twelve-hour shifts that can extend into the late evening. Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.Certification as a Veterinary Assistant or completion of relevant training preferred but not required.
Experience:
1-2 years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant, preferably with experience in surgery or clinical support.
Availability:
Must be available for either 3 twelve-hour shifts or 4 ten-hour shifts.On-call rotation is required once fully trained.Flexibility is required, as surgery times may extend beyond scheduled hours.
