Responsibilities Summary This position provides dog obedience and service dog task training to selected inmate handlers; coaches and supports weekend puppy raisers’ socialization activities and maintains obedience training in an effort to maximize each dog’s potential success as a service or guide dog. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Screens and selects suitable inmate handlers based on the program and facility’s rules and regulations. Instructs inmate handlers dog behavior, socialization, obedience, and service dog task training. Prepares and follows up on inmate handlers’ weekly training records and assignments. Interviews and selects applicants for weekend puppy raiser homes. Conducts home visit as part of selection process. Meets with weekend puppy raisers twice a month or as needed. Conducts and documents periodic evaluations and home visits. Reports on progress of the dog training and socialization for the purpose of assessing physical and temperament development of them to potentially serve as service dogs. Participates in other projects and special tasks as assigned by the management. Works with dog department to facilitate placement of new puppies and return of dogs when finished training. Be responsible for the return of advanced training dogs. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Technical degree preferred or equivalent experience. Two (2) years of experience in dog obedience instruction, service dog instruction, foster puppy instruction and ability to evaluate and manage volunteers. Ability to evaluate and monitor progress of puppies relating to desirable physical and temperament traits. Ability to travel, spending approximately 75% of time working at facility; 25% traveling to meet with weekend dog raisers in local area. Must possess valid state driver’s license. Excellent presentation, teaching and public speaking skills. Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department. GEO Secured Services
