JOB SUMMARY

The medical dosimetrist in collaboration with Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicists is responsible for designing a course of radiation therapy that complies with the Radiation Oncologists prescription. The plan is constructed by applying knowledge of anatomy and physiology, radiation biology, radiation oncology techniques, and computer computation.

Patient Care: Applies accepted clinical and nursing principles and practices to patient care activities in the facility.  

Provides care and treatment to assigned patients consistent with policy.  Assists facility staff in identifying and solving problems with clinical care.   Recommends revision of patient care policies and procedures as necessary to conform to accepted principles and practices. 

Compliance: Reviews policies/procedures and implements recommendations to ensure continued compliance with state, federal, and accrediting body rules, regulations, and standards. 

Remains current on all applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, and professional and accrediting body standards.   Submits required reports on a timely basis.   Develops, interprets, and implements, policies, procedures, regulations, programs and recommended practices to meet requirements of regulatory and accrediting organizations. 

Quality: Enforces clinical and nursing practice standards and licensing/accreditation rules and regulations to provide quality patient care.  

Controls patient/staff traffic to help prevent infections.  Monitors the facility's physical environment and initiates methods for maintaining safety, comfort, cleanliness, and order.   Evaluates suggestions, grievances, and processes to identify opportunities to improve performance and quality of care. 

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 4 Year/Bachelor’s Degree required. The employee is a graduate of a formally organized hospital or college affiliated medical dosimetry program with clinical and classroom curriculum, and other training and/or experience as a medical dosimetrist so that the total duration of study, training and experience is at least 18 months, OR the employee possesses a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in the physical or biological sciences and also demonstrates completion of two or more years of on-the-job training and work experience in medical dosimetry under the supervision of a Certified Medical Dosimetrist or Medical Physicist, OR the employee possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in a field other than those of the physical or biological sciences and also demonstrates completion of on-the-job training in medical dosimetry under the supervision of a Certified Medical Dosimetrist or Medical Physicist and has a subsequent period of supervised work experience in medical dosimetry of a minimum of four years.

Licensure: Certified Medical Dosimetrist or board eligible required.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and attentiveness to detail required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment. Demonstrates accuracy and attention to detail. Perform routine duties closely follow established procedures independent of supervision but consult with the Radiation oncologist and Medical Physicist as required. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

The job requires constant sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally. For any weight over 35 lbs. use Safe Handling Equipment.
