The University of Miami/UHealth Department of OBGYN has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Doula to work in Miami, FL. The Doula (H) performs prenatal assistance duties allowing expectant parent/s to feel prepared for delivery and more in control of their care during labor and delivery. The Doula (H) helps clients feel as comfortable as possible and helps parents recover from labor and delivery and reduces the stress associated with newborn care. The incumbent contributes to better outcomes for pregnant people and can improve patient satisfaction.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

Conducts prenatal assessments and educate and discuss concerns with the pregnant person about the prenatal and labor/birth experience.to explore clients’ birthing preferences and discuss any concerns

Discusses and creates birthing plans with expectant person based upon medical history, prior delivery history and co-morbidities that outline the delivery room’s environment, who will be present and whether clients want pain relievers.

Assists with preparations for the child’s arrival, such as setting up the nursery or running errands

Attends the birth and providing continuous emotional and physical support for clients throughout labor and delivery.

Acts as an advocate for clients to ensure medical providers adhere to their wishes

Provides advice about all infant feeding options and assisting with childcare during the early postpartum period

Participates in continuing education to remain current on standard of care guidelines for prenatal care, care during labor and birth, as well as and infant feeding option.

Assists with navigation and tracking adherence to postpartum care, and primary care for the patient and the infant. 

Supports chart review and data abstraction for several research programs.

Strives for a high level of accuracy and attention to detail when reviewing and entering source material.

Manages and maintains source documents as applicable.

Creates, manages, and maintains standard operating procedures for research source files.

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

Meet all new OB patients on initial appointment Monday PRIM clinic

Conduct Prenatal Education Classes (per modules provided)

Conduct tours for new OB patients on Labor and Birth

Meet with the patients during the follow-up prenatal visits to develop a personalized birthing plan.

Visit OB patients in labor during regular working hours (to be determined upon hire).

Visit mother and baby in the in-patient unit within 24-72 hours after birth.

Review and confirm health insurance and assist with registration of newborn before discharge.

Provide education and support for feeding choices during pregnancy and immediately after delivery.

Complete lactation specialist certification.

Develop a postpartum follow- up plan for mother and baby that includes Pediatric ID for 2-week, 6-8- weeks and every three months follow up for one year. 

Participate in HIV Curriculum training for Doulas (developed specifically for this program).

Conduct home visits (in teams of two with case worker or APRN) as needed at least one during the prenatal period and at least twice during the postpartum period.

Collect and record data as per reporting guidelines.

Attend specified education and training as requested by Nurse Supervisor.

Other duties as assigned.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum 1 years of relevant experience. 1-2 years of proven experience as a doula or related role preferred.

Certification in relevant specialty or field: Certification through approved organizations such as Doulas of North America International (DONA) or Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA)

Lactation certification preferred

Proven experience as a doula or related role.

Strong knowledge of childbirth and postpartum care.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to provide emotional support and handle stressful situations

Second language Spanish/Creole Preferred

Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.

Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Working with “at-risk” populations (Examples, HIV, domestic violence etc.)

Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
