Driver, Sterile Processing Center

POSITION SUMMARY:

Loads and transports both soiled and sterile items between the Manchester Hospital, Rockville Hospital and the Sterile Processing Unit located in Vernon.  Reports to the Manager of the Sterile Processing Department.

 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

·        The employee must have a valid Drivers license and a safe driving record that is absent any major violations such as DWI and speeding. 

 

COMPETENCIES

·        A general knowledge of safe handling practice when picking up, transporting and physically handling bio-hazardous equipment is required.

·        This position requires the employee drive and sit for a significant portion of the work day, and do a significant amount of lifting and carrying of tote bins weighing up to 50 pounds. 

·        A flexible mannerism is desirable because the location to which they will drive to next can change rapidly due to the sterile equipment needs of each hospital which is predicated by their patient and surgical flow. 

·        Reading, writing and speaking English is necessary in order to understand urgent verbal re-route instructions and to communicate with members of Sterile Processing and other units within each Hospital. 

·        This position requires that the Driver take into consideration the volume of equipment used and the quantity of equipment available to each Hospital when determining their daily driving schedule.

·        Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license (appropriate as outlined in the Eastern Connecticut Health Network’s Environment of Care Safety Policies and Procedures #110) maintain a driving record free of any violations and pass a safe driving educational program upon hire and annually thereafter.

Job-Specific Competency

1.       Drives to the Rockville Hospital and /or the Manchester Hospital to pick-up tote bins of soiled equipment.  Labels the tote bins and records/inventories the items and their destination using a computer keypad tracking device.  Delivers soiled items to the Vernon Sterilization Unit for sterile processing.

2.       Communicates on an ongoing basis with Hospital Sterile Processing Department Technicians and their Supervisor as well as Operating Room Technicians to determine if a special pick-up of soiled equipment or delivery of sterile equipment is needed.

3.       Verifies sterile items on the cart with the corresponding inventory tracking/load sheet to ensure that all equipment is returned to the proper location.  Using department standards and protocol, loads the sterile items into the Van, documents the inventory/tracking record and returns the items to the appropriate Hospital.

4.       Loads sterile items into tote bins inspecting the items while loading; looks for packaging that may have come undone or items that may be wet.  Determines which items may require re-sterilization and/or repackaging.  Properly closes, secures and affixes stickers to each tote bin, while updating the inventory tracking system.

5.       Maintains the cleanliness of the delivery van including scheduling service work on the vehicle when needed.  Coordinates vehicle service/maintenance drop off with the leasing company so that a temporary replacement vehicle can be obtained while our vehicle is being serviced.

6.       Picks up soiled equipment directly from patient care areas after Hospital Sterile Processing Unit hours.  Follows ECHN Safety Policy and Procedures, wears protective gloves and clothing during these pickups to avoid illness caused from contact with contaminated equipment containing bodily fluids and blood borne pathogens.

7.       Receives a copy of each Hospital’s Operating Room schedule.  Referring to the schedule, determines when pickup of soiled equipment and when to drop off sterile equipment to meet the Hospital’s operating needs.

8.       Demonstrates ability to be flexible, organized and function in stressful situations.
